The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage has proposed changes that will not provide creators with royalties from the Internet. The project concerns the implementation of the directive introducing changes to copyright and related rights in the digital space, but it does not regulate the issue of royalties for filmmakers. As it turns out, Poland is the only country in the European Union that does not regulate this issue.
In this matter, Jan Holoubek, Mateusz Damięcki and Maciej Stuhr, among others, expressed their dissatisfaction. Young artists also decided to fight for their future and not only went to the protest that took place on February 21, but also decided to take part in a press conference in the Sejm. “We do not stop fighting for Internet royalties!”
Michał Sikorski also spoke. An actor who became popular thanks to his appearance in the series “1670”. He decided to explain to Internet users what royalties are.
“Royalties are the last installment for our work, which is paid by television and cinemas from their profits. But the reality has changed so much that now we simply watch most films and series via streaming. And five years ago, the European Union introduced a directive that obliges states to Member States to regulate the law so that creators are guaranteed royalties, including for streaming,” he says in a video published on the Instagram of the SFP Young Circle.
The actor emphasized that Poland is the only country in the EU that does not have guaranteed royalties. “Neither the previous nor the current government, for unknown reasons, does this. That’s why we protest,” he added.
Every day, videos in which famous actors, creators and TV personalities support the protest appear on the profile of the SFP Youth Circle.
