“Madame Web” hit theaters in February 2024 and was supposed to introduce a new powerful heroine to the universe and, of course, conquer cinemas. The plan failed – the production was crushed in reviews and earned little. For a long time, it seemed that it would be the worst film of the year.
“Madame Web isn’t as bad as its somewhat botched promotional campaign might suggest. In fact, it’s much worse,” wrote the Rolling Stone critic. “A real Chernobyl-level disaster that seems increasingly radioactive as time goes on (…) The only amazing thing about this Spider-Man spin-off is that someone, somewhere, signed off on its release,” we could read online.
The film directed by SJ Clarkson hit the Max platform on August 31st and it happened without much fanfare. As it turns out, it could have been a big mistake, because Poles are watching “Madame Web” like crazy. The production is currently in second place in the platform’s ranking of the most popular films.
We’ve had clear confirmation that streaming is the last resort for films that didn’t do well in theaters, and sometimes we’d rather wait a few months to watch another financial flop from the comfort of our own living room than go to the cinema.
“Madame Web” tells about Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson), a young paramedic who gains the ability to predict the future. With it, she tries to protect three teenagers (Sydney Sweeney, Isabela MercedCeleste O’Connor) from the killer pursuing them, Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim). The man turns out to be connected to the woman’s past.
