Dronasol – a gadget of the future? An unusual idea for protection against rain

Drones are now increasingly used devices, used by both professionals and people who find a hobby in using these devices. These unmanned aerial vehicles, increasingly based on advanced technologies, not only bring spectacular views, but also open the door to countless new possibilities. Their use in the field of inspections, monitoring and military skirmishes is already commonplace.

Although many people still associate drones primarily with recording and photographing equipment, these devices are becoming not only an object of everyday use, but also a key element in many other areas of life. Drones are already being tested or put into use, which, for example, deliver parcels, check power lines, and even support services in rescue operations. Their role in society appears to be almost limitless, highlighting their importance as products of a new era of celestial exploration.

For example, the YouTuber who runs the I Build Stuff channel came up with the idea for such a product. The man was inspired by a comment from one of the observers.

A man passionate about DIY publishes his ideas and achievements on YouTube. One of his latest productions shows the process of creating a drone, i.e. a combination of a drone and an umbrella that is intended to protect the user from precipitation. Although it is only a prototype and is not refined enough to actually use it, it is already a step towards the “future of staying dry”, as Internet users joke.

I Build Stuff described the process of creating a flying umbrella. The designed parts necessary to assemble the drone umbrella were printed by the creator on a 3D printer. The object is a large quadrocopter with GPS, a gyroscope and, of course, a sheet to protect against rain. The four wide arms with propellers and other components required many corrections. But through trial and error and appropriate calibration, the umbrella drone was actually able to hover above the user’s head and protect it against possible precipitation.

The author still has a lot of work ahead of him, which is necessary to make the flying umbrella make any sense. First of all, you still have to control it, so there is no big difference whether we carry an ordinary umbrella with a handle or hold a drone controller in it. The creator of Dronasol has already announced that he plans to work on making the drone operate almost maintenance-free, thanks to a camera tracking the owner and appropriately configured algorithms. It would then autonomously track the person who uses it and protect their head against precipitation without special control.

Another issue is the wind, which is basically always associated with rain. With slightly higher gusts, the flying object created by I Build Stuff is simply unstable, easily subjected to gusts and thus causing the operator to get wet. There is nothing pleasant in the thought of the drone’s speeding propellers tearing up someone’s face, and considering the proximity of the drone to the head – it is quite possible. Therefore, you need to develop some decent security to prevent such a situation.

In addition to the above-mentioned improvements, Internet users provide the author with additional ideas for developing the drone concept. These include, for example, equipping the device with a sensor that will react to incoming rain and automatically inform about it and navigate to the owner. Another suggestion is to develop an umbrella drone so that it is the size of a telephone. The idea is to be able to carry it in your pocket all the time, and when bad weather comes, be able to turn on the option that will expand it to the appropriate size and protect it from rain.

– I have been an engineer for many years and it’s nice to see young people involved in engineering and learning from the same mistakes, the effects of which I also felt myself, e.g. by 3D printing elements with too small holes. I also love your excitement when, after so much hard work and problem-solving, you finally see all the pieces come together and actually work. This is the first video of yours I’ve seen but I just subscribed to it. I can’t wait to see you grow and progress! Keep up the great work – wrote one of the viewers of the video about dronesol.

His enthusiasm seems to be shared by most viewers. We can only wish the creator good luck in his next projects and watch whether a larger company will be interested in the idea of producing the drone invented by I Build Stuff. You can watch the entire video of the creation of the umbrella drone below.
