Damien Chazelle is back. What will the Oscar winner surprise next?

The same freedom that allows an artist to realize his or her own visions may lead to a certain hermeticism and confinement only to a specific group of recipients. This was the case with his last film. He created a spectacle for $80 million, but the work divided both critics and audiences it couldn't even cover its production costs as the film only grossed $63 million. This flop may also be due to the fact that Chazelle decided to turn the camera's eye towards the environment that finances him (it was by no means a sentimental turn like “La La Land”) to show the fall and total decline of early Hollywood, and this, after all, belongs to the rulers. big studios couldn't like it.

For all those who, like Chazelle himself, were worried whether he would ever make a film again, I have good news. During the CinemaCon conference in Las Vegas Paramount announced that it will release the director's new work in cinemas in 2025. According to Deadline, it will take place in a prison, and the creator will take over as director, screenwriter and producer. Additionally, Chazelle is currently in talks with big stars who would be involved in this project.

In an interview for the Talking Pictures podcast, the artist shared his thoughts about the “Babylon” flop and his future projects. “Maybe I won't be able to make another movie. I have no idea. We'll wait and see. I buried my head in the sand. I was busy writing. I will feel how the situation has changed after Babylon, only when I finish the script and try to make this film. I'm quite worried, but I have no illusions. I won't be getting a scaled budget anytime soon Babylon. At least not for my next film.”

This time the director will have fewer resources to use, but this does not necessarily mean that the work he will create is not worth waiting for. After all, his most appreciated film is “La La Land”, and in this case the production $30 million was spent and the box office reached over $440 million. Perhaps these financial restrictions are beneficial to him and his next proposal will be a hit again.
