The action of the final season “Stranger Things” will take place in the fall of 1987. Hawkins is marked by the consequences of opening a dimensional gateway, and a group of heroes will unite around a common goal – finding and defeating Vecna. The problem is that it disappeared without a trace. Nobody knows what his next step will be.
The government imposes a quarantine, strengthens control over the city and begins a hunt for Eleven, forcing her into hiding. As the anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance approaches, dark clouds once again gather over Hawkins – the upcoming clash will prove to be the deadliest in history.
“What makes this season special is the fact that it starts in chaos – our heroes lost at the end of the fourth season. We usually show their normal life, school and everyday life, and only then the supernatural element comes in. Here the story rushes from the first minute,” says Ross Duffer, co-creator of the series. Previously, it was assured that the fifth season would be a combination of the atmosphere of the first series with the panache of the fourth.
The final fifth season will consist of eight episodes. The first four will be released at 2:00 a.m. on November 27, 2025. The next three – on December 25. “Stranger Things” will end on December 31, 2025. The directors included brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, the originators of the series, its producer Shawn Levy and Frank Darabont, the creator of “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile”. This will be his return from artistic retirement.
The fourth season of “Stranger Things” has accustomed fans to episodes of the size of a feature film. We won’t see this in the first half of the final series. Ross, Duffer announced the duration of the upcoming four episodes on social media. The season opener, titled “The Crawl”, will be 68 minutes long. The second episode, “The Vanishing Of…”, will be 54 minutes long, while the third episode, “The Turnbow Trap”, will be 66 minutes long. The fourth episode, titled “Sorcerer”, will last 83 minutes.
According to the website “Puck News”, each of the eight episodes of the fifth season of “Stranger Things” cost approximately $60 million. This means that the production budget was approximately 480 million (and according to some reports even 520 million) dollars. This makes the Duffer Brothers’ story the most expensive series in history.
The final season of “Stranger Things” will see the return of the roles of teenage Hawkins residents: Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin and Noah Schnapp. Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton and Joe Keery will also reprise their characters who have been with us since the first season. Characters who joined the series in later episodes included Sadie Sink, Maya Hawke, Brett Galman and Priah Ferguson. Jamie Campbell Bower will return as Vecna. In turn, Linda Hamilton, known from the “Terminator” series, will play a new character – Dr. Kay, a government agent whose task will be to find Eleven.
Who will definitely not return? The creators assure that we will not see Joseph Quinn as Eddie Munson on screen. The hero died in the fourth season. Despite this, fans are still expressing hope that he will appear in one of the upcoming episodes. “I love how Joe Quinn teases people. But (Eddie) won’t come back, he’s dead. Besides, Joe is so busy right now that it should be obvious to everyone. He’s made like five movies. When was he supposed to have time to get back on set?” ‘Stranger Things'” – said Matt Duffer in an interview with Empire.
Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, told The Hollywood Reporter that “audiences will be really devastated” by the ending of the story. “I can’t wait to see the world’s reaction to the finale, because there will certainly be tears and sadness,” said the actor in April 2025, on the occasion of the premiere of “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” on Broadway. Sadie Sink, who plays Max Mayfield, also revealed that her “eyes were swollen from crying” on the last day on set.
They were then echoed by Ross Duffer. “This is the end of a long journey – both for us, the creators, and for the characters themselves. (…) It will be the fastest beginning we have ever shot, because our heroes immediately jump into action. I believe that this will be our most emotional season. The final episodes can really move viewers because they talk about the end of our journey together, as well as the end of childhood,” he revealed.
Although the script for the fifth season was completed before the fourth season was made, the creators could not immediately go on set. Filming was delayed, among other things, by the Hollywood strikes of actors and screenwriters in 2023. Later, we had to adapt to the actors’ calendars. David Harbor was doing “Thunderbolts” and Winona Ryder was doing “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”
Filming finally started on January 8, 2024 and lasted until December. Maya Hawke, who will return as Robin Buckley, revealed in the “Podcrushed” podcast that the episodes are very long (we already saw them in the fourth season) and basically everyone is now working on “eight films”.
Ross Duffer also talked about the scale of the project. “We spent an entire year filming this season. Ultimately, we shot 650 hours of footage. So, needless to say, this is our biggest and most ambitious season yet,” he said.
“We’ve been telling this story for almost a decade,” Ross Duffer wrote on Instagram after filming wrapped. “Many of our cast members joined us when they were children. They were ten or eleven years old. For them, it wasn’t just a show. It was a defining factor in their childhood. They grew up before our eyes and became more than actors – to us, they are family.”
“I consider it more than just the cast. Our crew – many of whom have been with us from the very beginning – hold a special place in our hearts. Their commitment and passion were the foundation of this production. Everyone was focused on bringing this story to a satisfying conclusion. They put their hearts and souls into it, and we couldn’t be more proud of what they achieved.”
