“In the '90s, I went to a studio and tried to make a movie about Barbie. The producer, a friend of mine, and the then head of Mattel were with me” – she said Stone. “They kicked us out of there. They said, 'Why do you want to take an American icon and destroy it? What's wrong with you?' I was given a lecture and shown to the door”.
David Spadeone of the podcast hosts, asked about plot details. “At the beginning of the movie, Barbie drives up to Mattel's headquarters in her toy car. The secret services come to pick her up and it turns out that the car is the size of their feet” – the star began.
“They take her to Mettel and everyone stays out of her way because she is the most important thing there. Everyone who matters there is chasing her and flattering her because she is the queen of Mattel. The movie was about the power of being Barbie and what she could do with it” – she continued.
According to Stone, the studio management did not like the idea because, according to them “Barbie shouldn't be so strong”. She added that they no longer work at the label.
The actress first mentioned her idea for a film about the popular doll after the Critics' Choice awards, during which America Ferreranominated for an Oscar for her role in “Barbie”received the SeeHer award.
She then gave a lofty speech, just like her character in the film. Stone retweeted it on her social media profiles, adding the comment: “I was laughed at by producers when I came to them with an idea for a film about Barbie in the 1990s (…). How far we've come. Dear ladies, thank you for your courage and perseverance”.
