Sean Baker’s surprising confession. His mother didn’t want him to make “Anora”

“Anora” tells the story of Ania, a dancer working in New York (Mike Madison), who, on the spur of the moment, marries the oligarch’s son. When the boy’s parents find out about the wedding, they decide to annul it as soon as possible. However, she does not intend to give up the wealth that has suddenly become part of her life.

“My mother wouldn’t agree with your choice,” he joked Bakerreceiving an award for the script of “Anora”. “I don’t think she even managed to read it ‘Red Rocket’. And later, when she had watched, I don’t know, half of the movie, she asked what would happen next. I summarized ‘Anora’ for her on the phone and she literally told me, and I quote, ‘Sean, people don’t want to see something like that.’

“Honestly, this award makes it easier. It’s uplifting and encouraging for me as a filmmaker,” he continued. “I will continue to write and make films that will receive withering and discouraging reviews from the one and only Richard Brody (critic of The New Yorker). Rest assured, my mother will read your reviews.”

“Anora” is one of the favorites in this year’s awards season. The film debuted at the Cannes festival, where it was awarded the Palme d’Or. It received five Golden Globe nominations, five for Independent Spirit and seven for Critics’ Choice. On January 19, 2025, we will find out how many chances he will have for an Oscar.
