Novel “Interview with the Vampire” was Anne Rice’s debut novel and turned out to be a bestseller. Published in 1976, the book brought the author fame and started a series called “The Vampire Chronicle”. Its main characters include: Lestat de Lioncourt, Louis de Pointe du Lac, Armand, Claudia and the queen of bloodsuckers – Akasha.
Considered the best part of the series, “Interview with the Vampire” was adapted into a film in 1994, directed by Neil Jordan. Tom Cruise played Lestat, while Brad Pitt played Louis.
The cult book was also adapted into a series; the first season of the series was received very well by viewers and critics. The second installment of the series has been available since June 20. At this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, the audience could see a preview of the next season. The third installment of the series will be based on the next book in the “Vampire Chronicles”, titled “The Vampire Lestat”.
The Relationship Between Lestat and Louis
Anne Rice’s 1976 novel suggested a romantic relationship between Lestat de Lioncourt and Louis, although Louis’s primary feelings towards Lestat were resentment, frustration, and pity. The subtexts in the novel drew on the rich tradition of vampire fiction, but the possibility of a deeper, literal connection between the characters was not explicitly stated.
The AMC+ series makes Louis and Lestat’s complicated love-hate relationship in the first book explicitly romantic.
Weaving in content from subsequent novels
The series is largely an adaptation of Interview with the Vampire , but in many ways it is also a sequel. The series presents most of the events of Anne Rice’s novel as canon, while greatly embellishing them with additional details and delaying the resolution of the story.
Claudia’s Age
Claudia was only five years old when she was turned in the book. The series character became a vampire at 14.
Putting an older Claudia on the show allowed for a lot of new issues to be raised. It would have certainly been difficult for the creators to find a child actress who could play such a young character and handle the themes in the script.
The Importance of Daniel Molloy
Although the only two characters in Interview with the Vampire were Louis and the man interviewing him, Louis’s monologue took up most of the novel. As such, Louis’s storytelling accurately portrayed Lestat, Claudia, and Armand. The journalist’s role was largely to ask questions and press a button on a tape recorder. It wasn’t until the third novel in the series that readers learned his name.
Daniel Molloy and Louis interact much more in the series. The journalist also has more seriousness; he is older, wiser. In the series, Daniel is a link between the present and the history of Louis’ bizarre history.
