Eagles 2024: “Kos”, “Green Border”, “Filip” – these are the best films in Poland! There were plenty of surprises!

This year most nominations for Polish Film Awards – in as many as 16 categories! – received “Blackbird” Paweł Maślony. 13 nominations went to films “Philip” Michał Kwieciński and “Doppelganger. The Doppelgänger” Jan Holoubek. “Peasants” they had a chance for eight statuettes, however “Green Border” received six nominations. How did this translate into statuettes?

Six Eagles were won by “Kos”, four by “Filip”, two (including the Audience Award) by “Chłopi”, one each by “Doppelganger. Doppelganger” and “Green Border”, but Agnieszka Holland’s film won the most important Eagle in the best film category. Anyone who watched the gala broadcast may be surprised, it seemed that either “Kos” or “Filip” would win in this category.

In leading acting categories they triumphed Magdalena Cielecka (“Medicines Eryk Kulm Jr. (“Philip”). IN supporting rolesAgnieszka Grochowska (“Kos”) i Tomasz Schuchardt (“Doppelgänger. Doppelgänger”).

During the ceremonial evening of the Special Eagle, the Lifetime Achievement Award was received by Agnieszka Holland. This is the first Eagle in the director’s career, or rather the second – she won both in one evening.

“You can only make good films when you are free” (…) There is no democracy without humanity. – she said while accepting the award.

– Eagle for “The Green Border”? In my opinion, the film of the year is “Kos”, but this artistically uneven, although important film by Agnieszka Holland was the strongest film “protest song” in Polish cinema in recent years. This is a film that deeply moved and irritated me in equal measure. However, I am pleased with Holland’s consistency in defending the values that are important to her – critic Łukasz Adamski comments “hotly” to Interia on the verdict of the Polish Film Academy.

– I am very happy with the victory of “The Green Border”, especially in relation to the festival in Gdynia, where this film was clearly missing. Film awards, as has always been known, are not only the result of tastes, let alone some objective, fanciful criteria – they are also a sign of their times. Agnieszka Holland’s film is a “quick reaction cinema” shot with great passion and at the same time a cry of protest, still (unfortunately) current – wrote Anita Piotrowska from “Tygodnik Powszechny” for Interia.
