$81.5 million – that’s it “Dune: Part Two” it made money in its first weekend of showing in North American theaters. This opening is in line with what experts expected, predicting that the film would bring producers around $80 million.
The production had the best start of all films to date Denis Villenueve. His first part, “Dune”, had a result that was almost twice as bad. It is worth noting, however, that that production premiered simultaneously on HBO Max.
The lack of strong competition and the high ratings given by viewers are factors that indicate that “Dune: Part Two” will soon beat the overall result of “1” – just under $110 million – in American multiplexes.
Other films played in US cinemas were much less popular. “Bob Marley: One Love” earned $7.4 million, “Ordinary Angels” – $3.85 million, the financial disaster that turned out to be “Madame Web” – $3.2 million, and the seventh and eighth episodes of the fourth season played in cinemas biblical series “The Chosen. Chosen” – 3.15 million.
The American achievements of the second “Dune” include the results from other countries of the world. The production has already premiered in as many as 71 countries outside the United States and in 67 it was number one on the box-office list. She earned $97 million there, making a total of $178.5 million. This is a good start to the adventure of Villeneuve’s film in cinemas, but it should be remembered that its budget was as much as $190 million, excluding marketing and distribution costs.
“Dune: Part Two” did very well, especially in IMAX theaters, where it grossed $32.2 million, or approximately 18 percent of the total gross.
The film has still not had its premiere on large Asian markets: China (it will debut there on March 8) and Japan (March 15), so its profits can be expected to gradually increase.
“Dune: Part Two” follows Paul Atreides’ impressive journey as he forges an alliance with Chani and the Fremen. At the same time, he goes on the warpath, burning with the desire for revenge on the conspirators who led to the downfall of his family. Faced with a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, Paul wants to prevent a tragic future that only he can predict.
We will see him again in the main role Timothee Chalamet, who reprises the role of Paul Atreides in the spectacular production. “In the first film, Paul Atreides was a student. In the second one, we will see him become a leader,” the star revealed. In the sequel to “Dune” the following will also return to their roles: Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling and Javier Bardem. The new faces will include: Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walker, Léa Seydoux and Anya Talor-Joy.
Both parts of “Dune” made by Villenueve are adaptations of the famous novel by Frank Herbert. The director immediately decided that two films should be made, because the novel was too large to fit the events described in one into one. But this became possible only because the first part received great ratings from viewers and critics. The second part of the production is one of the most anticipated films of 2023. It was originally scheduled to hit theaters on November 3, 2023. However, due to strikes in Hollywood, the premiere of the production had to be postponed.
