Damo Suzuki is dead. The singer Can was 74 years old

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our friend Lady Suzuki. His creative energy touched many people around the world, not only in the band Can. Lady, we will miss your smile,” commented the band members.

Lady Suzuki was born in Kobe, Japan. He began his adventure with music at the age of eight, when his parents gave him a flute. In the 1960s, he left his home country and went to Europe, where he learned musical skills by visiting each country.

At the beginning of the 1970s, he went to Germany, where the musicians of Can – saw him in action. Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit. The musicians were looking for someone to replace their previous vocalist – Malcolm Money. So they made Suzuki an offer.

Damo w Can acted as a vocalist in the years 1970 – 1973. At that time, he recorded the following albums with the group: “Soundtrack”, “Tago Tago”, “Ege Bamyasi” and “Future Days”. Suzuki was appreciated as a vocalist who improvised during performances, singing in various languages.

The singer’s voice can be heard, among others, on songs “Vitamin C”, “Tango Whiskyman”, “Don’t Turn the Light On, Leave Me Alone”, “Mother Sky and Spoon”.

After leaving the band, Suzuki took a break from music for 10 years. He returned with his own solo project, with which he was active for many years.

In 2014, the musician was diagnosed with colon cancer. The struggle with the disease was the main topic of the documentary “Energy”.
