From the tension of producer Sam McAlister’s difficult negotiations with Buckingham Palace to journalist Emily Maitlis’s stunning showdown with the prince, Powerful Topic is the story of women who showed tremendous courage and stopped at nothing to make sure the world heard their story.
Gillian Anderson played Emily Maitlis, and Rufus Sewell played Prince Andrew. We will also see Billie Piper (Sam McAllister) and Keeley Hawes (Amanda Thirsk).
Philip Martin (“The Crown”) is the director of “A Strong Thread”, and the script is written by Peter Moffat (“Your Honor”).
The latter based it on the motifs of the book by Sam McAlister entitled “Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews”. The author describes how she and other BBC journalists managed to persuade the prince to talk to him two months after the death of Jeffrey Epstein.
The interview with Prince Andrew was conducted by Emily Maitlis. The journalist questioned him thoroughly about his knowledge of Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. The latter was convicted of child trafficking and other crimes. During the interview, Prince Andrew said he regrets that he is still associated with Epstein, who pleaded guilty in 2008 to child solicitation. However, he did not apologize to Epstein’s victims, which aroused public outrage.
After this interview aired, Prince Andrew was removed from his royal duties. He was also not present during the grandly celebrated Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and related events organized on the occasion of her 70th anniversary on the British throne.
