“A Gentleman in Moscow”: A successful adaptation of the best-selling novel. It will attract the attention of millions

In the meantime, he did not give up performing in television productions – in the third season of HBO's “Fagro” he played twins, and in Netflix's “Halston” he played Roy Halston Frowick, a designer who created a fashion empire. Now he returns in the series “A Gentleman in Moscow” and not only delights, but he also has a fantastic… mustache.

“A Gentleman in Moscow” is an adaptation of the novel by Amor Towles. Its hero is Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov (Ewan McGregor), who, by writing a poem unflattering to the government and the upcoming changes in the country, fell foul of the authorities. The hero is punished for his inappropriate views – the man who previously lived in a beautiful room in one of the most luxurious hotels in Moscow has to move to a tiny apartment in the attic of the Metropol hotel. Additionally he can never leave the building – he must remain within its walls for the rest of his life. Otherwise, he will face punishment – the harshest possible.

The series adaptation of “A Gentleman in Moscow” is a similarly intimate story not so much about the isolation that Rostov experiences in the first days, but about love, friendship, community and humility. The main character is a well-read aristocrat, an intelligent man with impeccable manners. However, he pays a heavy price for certain misconceptions about nobility.

Only in Metropol, after numerous ups and downs, difficult moments and moments of doubt, does he establish a true friendship with Nina (Alexa Goodall), a girl who also spends most of her time alone within the walls of the hotel. He also finds love. And here's a surprise – the role of Anna, with whom Rostow falls in love, is played by the actor's wife, known from the series “Ahsoka”, Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Ewan McGregor plays Rostov very well, showing all his emotional states. Some may be impressed by his “gentlemanly” calmness with which he reacts to various situations, others may be a bit disturbed, but it is worth noting that Rostow, despite everything, does not lose some optimism.

The outline of the political situation is also interesting, but it is not very insightful – the creators' focus remains on the characters, their relationships and dilemmas. If you like McGregor, the series is certainly worth watching. And – I'll repeat myself – his mustache is fantastic.
