“Charlatan” was based on one of the most widely read books by Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz. The book was printed in installments in the daily press. It quickly aroused great interest from readers and producers, who offered the author large sums for the right to film adaptation.
The first film adaptation was made before World War II, in 1937, by Michał Waszyński. Today, however, few people remember this version. Poles associate Jerzy Hoffman’s film made 45 years later with the story of Professor Rafał Wilczur.

It remains popular and loved by viewers to this day, and it is difficult for us to imagine the most important holidays without a screening of this cult film.
