Wojciech Marczewski’s films at the Kultura cinema in Warsaw

Film Review Wojciech Marczewski organized by the Polish Filmmakers Association. The screenings will be preceded by conversations led by Grażyna Torbicka and Łukasz Knap.

“The review is also a good opportunity to emphasize that Marczewski’s activity goes far beyond directing. He was a co-founder of the TOR Film Team, president of the Federation of Film Discussion Clubs, and vice-president of the Polish Filmmakers Association in the years 1978-1983. It is also impossible to ignore his achievements as a teacher and artistic supervisor of excellent feature debuts. He was the originator of the ’30 minutes’ program. He lectured on directing in Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and the Netherlands. He was also the dean of the Directing Department at The National Film and TV School of Great Britain in London. He is the co-founder of the Wajda School , where he still serves as Program Director,” it was written in the press release.

On February 26, viewers will be able to see the film “Zmory”. Grażyna Torbicka will talk to the director before the screening. “Zmory” is an adaptation of the famous novel by Emil Zegadłowicz. The film deals with the coming of age of a sensitive boy in a Galician town at the beginning of the 20th century. Nicholas the Silver begins his studies at the imperial and royal high school, where he mainly experiences contempt and sadism. “Zmory” tells the story of an attempt to save autonomy and opposition to an institution that suppresses all manifestations of individualism. The debuting director received awards for the film at festivals in San Sebastian and Gdynia.

On February 27, Łukasz Knap will talk to Marczewski, and viewers will watch the film “Chills”second, and at the same time the director’s most personal film devoted to the problems of a teenager’s maturation in absolutely special conditions. Its hero is thirteen-year-old Tomek Żukowski (Tomasz Hudziec). After his father is arrested by the Security Service, the boy is sent to a several-week training camp. Under the influence of his feelings for his bridesmaid – an activist who believes in communist propaganda, he undergoes a mental metamorphosis. “Dreszcze” brought Marczewski important awards – the Golden and Silver Lions in Gdynia and four awards, including the Silver Bear in Berlin.

The last day of the review will begin with a conversation between Grażyna Torbicka and Wojciech Marczewski. Viewers will be able to see later “Escape from the Freedom Cinema”. Movie is about about a censor (Janusz Gajos) who goes to the “good side of the force”. “Escape from the Freedom Cinema” was interpreted as a manifesto in defense of freedom of artistic expression, and at the same time a metaphorical farewell to the Polish People’s Republic.
