Winona Ryder: The Outsider Icon Who Made Weird Fashionable

Winona Ryder never cared about what others thought. She followed her intuition and chose projects that her heart told her to do. She was born into a hippie environment that didn’t use electricity. When she was a little older, she moved to San Francisco with her parents. Although she did quite well academically in school, she wasn’t a popular person. She often noted in interviews that her social life was quite sad and unsuccessful. Roles in popular films didn’t necessarily improve the situation.

The actress came to first casting at the age of 13 and made her debut in the 1986 drama “Lucas”. In many of her early films, she played the roles of unusual, sometimes even strange girls. We saw her as the eccentric Lydia in the film “Beetlejuice” from 1988, where she aroused the interest of critics. She appeared as Veronica Sawyer in the film “Deadly Attraction” (1988) alongside her future partner, Christian Slater. She accepted the risky role despite her agent’s wishes; fearing for the young actress’s career, she begged her not to go to the audition. She also played a teenager who falls in love with the title character in Tim Burton’s next film – “Edward Scissorhands” from 1990. In 1994, Winona was nominated for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe for her role as May Welland in the melodrama “The Age of Innocence”.

Her great streak was interrupted by one event. In 2001, the media reported that Ryder had been caught trying to shoplift from a Beverly Hills store. This could have been the end for her. The actress was flooded with criticism, and curious reporters did not leave her side for a moment. They learned, among other things, that the Hollywood star had appeared in court, which sentenced her to community service and three years of probation. After this event, Winona tried to explain her failure as kleptomania, but not everyone believed her. Over time, she managed to repair her image, and the directors decided to give her another chance.

Since 2016, he has starred in the acclaimed Netflix series “Stranger Things”for which she received a Golden Globe nomination.

In Tim Burton’s latest film, the actress returned to the role of the gothic teenager Lydia Deetz. The actress has repeatedly mentioned in interviews that returning to the story presented in “Beetlejuice” was a dream for her. However, when it came to working on the new production, it turned out that it was not such an easy challenge. Ryder admitted that she had difficulty imagining her character as an adult.

“I never imagined Lydia having children or being in any kind of relationship. (…) I always thought she would probably live in her own world as she got older. Somewhere in the attic, happy but lonely” – she said in an interview for Slash Film.

She went on to say that casting Justin Theroux as her partner and Jenny Ortega as her daughter, Astrid, was a big help in reimagining the character. The actors quickly bonded, which helped Ryder imagine what Lydia would do next.

The cast also includes other stars known from the first part: Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara. One of the roles will also be played by Monica Bellucci, the director’s partner in real life, who will play the wife of the title character. The team also includes Willem Dafoe, who will play the “policeman from the afterlife.”

The movie “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” you can see it in cinemas today (September 6)!
