Winona Ryder has repeatedly mentioned in interviews that returning to the story presented in “Beetlejuice” was a dream for her. However, when it came to working on the new production, it turned out that it was not such an easy challenge. The actress admitted that she had difficulty imagining her character in adulthood. Let us recall that in the first part of the film from 1988, she played a gothic teenager who is obsessed with dark themes.
“I never imagined Lydia having children or being in any kind of relationship. (…) I always thought she would probably live in her own world as she got older. Somewhere in the attic, happy but lonely” – she said in an interview for Slash Film.
She went on to say that casting Justin Theroux as her partner and Jenny Ortega as her daughter, Astrid, was a big help in reimagining the character. The actors quickly bonded, which helped Ryder imagine what Lydia would do next.
The cast also includes other stars known from the first part: Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara. One of the roles will also be played by Monica Bellucci, the director’s partner in real life, who will play the wife of the title character. The crew also includes Willem Dafoe, who will play the “policeman from the afterlife”.
After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetzes return home to Winter River. Lydia is still haunted by the memory of Beetlejuice. Now her life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers a mysterious model of the town in her attic, accidentally opening a portal to the afterlife. Trouble is in the air in both worlds, so it’s only a matter of time before someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the insidious demon returns to cause chaos like only he can – we learn from the official description of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”.
The film will hit the big screens soon September 6!
