“Donnie Darko”
“Donnie Darko” is like jumping down a rabbit hole. It is a film puzzle that includes time travel, a Lynchian view of American suburbs, high-school drama, a parody of coaching, physics, philosophy, social unrest at the turn of the millennium and “Alice in Wonderland”. It’s the same mystery as director Richard Kelly, who after his brilliant debut made two more equally strange films – and then fell silent. It is also a breakthrough role for Jake Gyllenhaal, who was 20 at the time of filming, and as Donnie Darko he first demonstrated his talent for creating ambiguous, complicated characters.
Talking about cultism is not an abuse in the case of “Donnie Darko”: it is a textbook example of a cult work. The title was lost in cinemas, but over time it gained crowds of devoted fans who, in the era of the early Internet, analyzed the smallest aspects of the film on forums, trying to find the answer to the question: what was it all about? The mystery of “Donnie Darko” also fascinated Polish cinema fans; and this despite the lack of distribution in our country. On the 25th anniversary of its premiere, thanks to Reset Film, the title will finally hit Polish screens.
Who is Donnie Darko? At school – a teenage outsider. At home – a boy struggling with mental problems. In dreams – a chosen one visited by a large, dark rabbit named Frank. The latter claims that the world will end soon. And when dreams begin to creep into reality, Donnie is faced with larger-than-life questions: about time, fate, and the nature of the entire world.
