My name is Wayan Dariana and I come from Bali. Due to difficult family circumstances, I had to start working very early, so I only completed primary school. I knew that tourism was one of the main sources of income. And when it comes to tourism, you know – English. . Thanks to this daily practice, I gained language proficiency that today helps me work with guests from all over the world.
As a native Balinese, I can say that life in Bali is a mixture of unique culture, tradition and modernity. About 5 million people live on the island, 90% of them are Hindus, and the rest are Muslims, Buddhists and Christians. Most residents work in tourism, although traditional farming communities still exist in the villages. It’s not always easy, but I think overall we are happy people.
Working as a guide is my passion. I can share knowledge about our culture and traditions, and at the same time learn from the guests I take on tours. This is my main professional activity. Honestly, for many people it serves as their main or additional source of income. We have a lot of tourists and we have to take advantage of it, because in many houses it does not “overflow”.
Typical life in Bali is a combination of working in tourism with everyday spiritualistic practice. In many villages, people still practice traditional crafts and agriculture. Mainly men work in tourism, and women often take care of the house. However, my wife works professionally – she is an accountant. We live at home with the whole family (grandparents, parents and us), so elders often help take care of the children. This model of living and housing is the most common in Bali.
Bali has been changing very dynamically in the last 10 years, especially after the pandemic. Developers are working intensively and there are fewer and fewer green areas. This phenomenon causes sadness among local residents. Fortunately, there are legal standards that regulate this. Otherwise, concrete buildings would completely take over the island and there would be no greenery left.
Yes, . They open businesses, organize online workshops and do many other things. Bali has truly become incredibly popular. I also meet Poles on the island.
The income is small, but life is really not expensive – the average salary is about $200 a month. That’s why many people work as freelancers to earn extra money. It is true that official statistics and the minimum wage are higher, but the reality is different.
Relationships with foreigners are quite common. Some people enter into relationships for business reasons, and others – well – just fall in love. I even heard about Polish-Balinese couples. It would seem that such couples would want to emigrate to Europe. Well, no. Most people are very happy to settle in Bali.
Bali is an island with a unique culture – most of the inhabitants are Hindus, while in other regions of Indonesia the majority are Muslims. This makes Bali very different from the rest. Of course, it’s not just a matter of religion. . Or at least for a long time.
I know several people from Poland thanks to my work, although I am not in very close contact with them. As you noticed, I can say a few words in Polish! !
