This is from the meeting with Steven Wilson the latest photos come Phil Collinswhich were published on his social media profiles. Both musicians talked about anniversary releases “Face Value”.
45 years after the premiere of the singer and drummer’s solo debut Genesis the material was released on vinyl in the form of four discs (as “Face Value (Full Value)”). In addition to the original album (mastered at half speed from the original analog tape at Abbey Road studios), the set also includes rare and unreleased live recordings, demos and outtakes.
The disc has also been released as a Blu-ray Audio, which features brand new mixes of the album by Steven Wilson in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 and stereo formats.
Steven Wilson, now 58, has been called “the most successful artist of all the British musicians you’ve never heard of” (“Daily Telegraph”), “the king of prog rock” (“Guardian”) and “an independent pop star” (“Uncut”). He has won numerous awards, six Grammy nominations, and has signed over 50 albums; he is also a valued author of remixes of classic albums (including King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes, Marillion, Rush, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Anathema).
Phil Collins: How the divorce album put him on top
“I had a wife, two children, two dogs, and the next day I lost everything. A lot of these songs were written because I was going through these emotional changes” – yes Phil Collins he recalled the turn of the 1970s and 1980s.
At that time, the musician was very busy with his activities in… Genesis (since 1975 after his departure Peter Gabriel the drummer also became the main vocalist and frontman) and side projects – from the albums of colleagues from the parent band (Steve Hackett, Anthony Phillips) to a jazz fusion band Brand X. His professional involvement had an impact on the musician’s private life – his wife was fed up with such a life Andrea Bertorelliwho was largely responsible for the house and raising two small children: son Simon and daughter Joely from her previous marriage (Collins adopted her).
It was the breakdown of the marriage that had the greatest impact on the atmosphere of the “Face Value” album. When his wife left home (she filed for divorce in 1979), Phil Collins began writing songs reflecting his life.
“In case ‘In the Air Tonight’which is one of the first songs I wrote, the words just flowed out of me. I didn’t have anything written down, everything happened very spontaneously. And since then I have always done it this way,” he said.
The mentioned song is the first single from “Face Value” and one of the biggest solo hits of Collins and the entire decade. The impressive drum part in the second part of the song went down in history (at the beginning we only hear the drum machine tracks and Collins’ voice processed by the vocoder). This is what made hip-hop artists eagerly reach for the song (including Nas, DMX, 2Pac, Lil’ Kim, Kesha, Young Buck), incorporating samples from “In the Air Tonight” into his compositions.
“Face Value” turned Phil Collins from the drummer of Genesis into a solo artist with a global reach. “The Divorce Album” turned out to be a huge commercial success (five times platinum in Great Britain and the USA). It was also thanks to her that the Briton became one of three artists (along with Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney), who have sold over 100 million albums with the band and solo.
