The “West Side Story” campaign takes place in the 1950s. The hero of the film is the leader of the Puerto Rican Gang Sharks, Bernardo. Their opponent is the Jets gang fully composed of white Americans. It is headed by Riff. Riff’s friend, Tony, falls in love with Bernard’s sister, Maria. Forbidden love leads to a tragedy.
Ansel Elgort (“Baby Driver”) and Rachel Zegler appeared in the roles of in love, Tony and Maria in Spielberg’s film, which we will also see in the continuation of the comic film “Shazam!” The remaining roles were played by: Ariana Debose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Corey Stoll and Brian d’Arcy James.
Steven Spielberg believes that his musical “West Side Story” as a story about the conflict is extremely current today. “The divisions between different thinking people are as old as the world. And the divisions between Sharks and Jets gangs from 1957, which inspired the musical, were deep. But they were not as divided as we are divided as we are now” – said the director.
“In the middle of the process of creating a script, which lasted five years, it turned out that the divisions became even more violent. What saddened me a lot. The history of the musical was not only a history of division of territories, but a racial division. To which the modern viewer is even easier to relate than viewers from 1957” – he added.
But for the film adaptation of the famous musical Spielberg, he started not because he saw in it a universal story about growing social divisions. Personal reasons pushed him. Or more precisely the promise he made in his childhood.
