Weekend at the cinema. What to watch in the last days of August?

Anh Hung Tran received for “Bouillon and Other Passions” award for directing at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. After watching it, everyone will say that he fully deserved it. His latest film is an ode to love and food and the love of food. Preparing subsequent dishes becomes an act that binds their relationship for the characters, bringing them closer than subsequent nights together.

It’s a beautiful and moving melodrama that you can’t go to on an empty stomach. Cooking, baking and frying takes up as much time as the adventures of the characters. Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel are wonderful in the roles of the lovers. In turn, the dishes they prepare look simply delicious. A film that leaves you wanting more.

Two strangers agree to go on a date and quickly move into a rented room. However, at some point, their romantic night turns into a bloody confrontation. The man chases the wounded woman, following her trail through the wilds of Oregon. The fugitive is ready to do anything necessary to survive. Unfortunately, as a result of her injuries, she has less and less strength, and her chances are shrinking with every minute.

‘Strange Darling’ has so many narrative twists and astonishing plot twists that summarizing the plot could really spoil the viewing of this intriguing (…) thriller, which proves that the magic of old cinema is not dead. JT Mollner has made one of the most original horror films of recent years, one that even Brian De Palma would be proud of” – wrote Łukasz Adamski in a review for Interia.

“The Last Summer” Catherine Breillat also debuted in the Main Competition at the 2023 Cannes International Film Festival. It tells the story of the romance between Anne (Léa Drucker), a successful lawyer, and Theo (Samuel Kircher), her husband’s son from a previous marriage. Her relationship with the young man puts not only her career at risk, but also her life.

Valeria Bruni Tedeschi was originally supposed to play Anne. Theo was supposed to be played by Paul Kircher. When the actor had to give up the role, he suggested his younger brother Samuel. This is his film debut.

“The Last Summer” is recommended by, among others, John Waters, who placed it fifth on his personal list of the ten best productions of last year. The film also received four César nominations: for director, adapted screenplay, actress and acting debut.
