“We have full openness here” (interview)

Magda Goździńska-Birecka: Why did you decide to become a juror in the “Must Be The Music” program?

Sebastian Karpiel-Bułecka (Zakopower): – Mainly out of curiosity – I wanted to test myself in a new role and see how I can handle as a juror. At the beginning I wasn’t one hundred percent convinced if it was for me, but ultimately I came to the conclusion that it is worth broadening your horizons and not being afraid to try new challenges. And I like to undertake things that allow me to develop.

What was the biggest challenge for you?

– I think that one of the biggest challenges is the need to assess. There are four of us in the jury and each of us has to comment, evaluate the participant’s performance, share our opinion. It often happens that we all have an identical opinion. It is difficult when you want to express an opinion and suddenly exactly what I was thinking about falling from the mouth of another juror; Natalia, Miuosha Whether David. And it immediately turns out that I have to quickly come up with a new way to convey my thought, approach the topic differently. And this is particularly difficult because we have to remain careful and creative. This is definitely one of the biggest challenges on the set.

What do you follow when assessing participants? Is authenticity, originality or technique more important to you?

– Everything matters. The technique is important, because it is a foundation, but the authenticity, originality and truth that the artist brings to the stage is equally important. Transferring emotions is crucial – after all, the artist is a kind of relay that should move the listener.

I value those who can surprise me – both with my personality and workshop. The originality is that someone brings something different, stands out from the rest. I am looking for such people who not only sing or play, but have something unique.

What impresses me in this program is a huge variety. We have full openness here – there are no age or genre restrictions, so the cross -section of talents is really impressive. Thanks to this, we can discover artists from completely different music worlds.

When assessing contractors, are you wondering what sounds can hit in the taste of the Polish audience and gain popularity after the program?

– If I were just wondering what Poles might like, it would be a bit of simple thinking. What is most important to me is, above all, what a given participant represents himself, what emotions evoke in me. I believe that in Poland there are people with similar sensitivity as mine who appreciate an ambitious band who does not sing about nonsense, but convey valuable content in their songs. It is important that the music moved, that it is melodic and the arrangement interesting. There are certainly those who will appreciate these qualities and give such artists a chance so that they can occur more broadly on the music scene.

Is participation in the program also a form of learning for you? Does observing participants and their artistic path bring something new to your own musical perspective?

– I did not think about it if I was learning something from the participants. Of course, when I see a good band that plays great, sometimes there is such a thought: “Oh man, it’s cool, it’s a pity that I didn’t get it myself.”

I still learn to live – like most of us. I learn to deal with adversities, with the difficulties we encounter on our way. This is the most fascinating – observing people who, despite difficulties, failures or diseases, go out on stage and face their weaknesses. They want to change something, but also help others, giving an example through their changes. Such attitudes are inspiring. They show that it is worth finding strength to live, despite the turbulence that we encounter in life. It is captivating and motivating.

How do you perceive Poland in terms of music? Do you think it is a country in which music plays a special role?

– I think that in Poland there is a lack of appreciating our cultural wealth, especially folklore, what we have in our Polishness. We often look west, and younger generations come to programs and do not sing in Polish, but in English. This is puzzling, because Polish language is not worse at all. I understand if someone wanted to release an album on the Anglo -Saxon market, but if they want to debut in Poland, why not sing in Polish? Some young artists may also be influenced by complexes that result from historical beliefs about the superiority of Western patterns.

If we look at the history of Polish music, even at classical music, then outstanding composers such as Fryderyk Chopin, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Szymanowski Whether Wojciech Kilar They were inspired by Polish folklore and in this way they gained international fame. We still have huge potential in Poland that we can draw on folk tradition. Drawing from these roots is a way to originality. Of course, I am not saying that nothing interesting is happening abroad, but I personally focus on Poland and its rich culture.

Is there any musical message or idea that you would like to convey to all those starting your artistic path?

– This is a difficult question, because success in music is really the result of many factors. This is not a simple recipe, but rather a process full of challenges and uncertainty. I have some thoughts and suggestions that can help. First of all, humility is crucial – this is the basis … It is important to look for originality, maybe by reaching for Polishness, to our rich folklore and culture, which are unique and very original. We have beautiful roots to reach. But of course not everything depends on us. You have to have some luck, but meetings with the right people on your way are equally important. They can direct and inspire us, even if it happens unconsciously. So for believers – prayer for such meetings, and for those who do not believe – it is worth creating somehow opportunities for such meetings to take place. This is a really very complex process. My dream is that young, ambitious people who have passion and dreams would be able to combine all these elements and reach the place where they want to be. This is not a guarantee of success, but it definitely increases the likelihood that it will succeed.

What do you think is the most valuable in your musical path? What experiences and moments had the greatest impact on who you are as an artist?

– The most important values that led me to success are my consistency and work. In music and life, the most important are and always truth, determination, originality and honesty. These values that give strength and help persevere in the most difficult moments are the foundation of real success. And this is the whole essence. Consistency in pursuing the goal, not to shortcuts, failure. I was also unusual to meet people who helped me find the right way.
