Warsaw SerialCon 2024: “History based on a pack of lies” is a real phenomenon. British humor and a masterful game with the viewer

“A Story Based on a Pack of Lies” is a British series that combines elements of thriller, black comedy and drama, creating an engaging mix of emotions. The production entertains with absurdity, disturbs with danger and moves with the authenticity of the characters. It is a story that reflects the complexity of modern relationships, exploring themes such as loneliness, manipulation and the power of female support.

History focuses on two women: Alice Newman (Rebekah Staton) and Cheryl Harker (Marianne Jean-Baptiste). Alice is an ambitious secretary at a fashion house who has struggled for years for stability after her husband disappeared, leaving her with financial problems. Cheryl, on the other hand, is a sought-after writer whose life has become monotonous after her husband’s death, despite her professional successes. Standing in their way is Robert Chance (Alistair Petrie), a charismatic “activist traveler” who turns out to be the same fraudster who once ruined Alice’s life. The women, united by a common goal and unexpected friendship, decide to reveal the truth and regain justice.

Penelope and Ginny Skinner are responsible for creating the series. The production was directed by Robbie McKillop and Nicole Charles, and supervised by such personalities as Naomi de Pear and Lydia Hampson. The music, which sets the tone for individual scenes and builds tension, was created by Arthur Sharpe, winner of the Ivor Novello Award. The photos were taken in Oxford.

“A Story Based on a Pack of Lies” is a masterful game with the viewer, in which the atmosphere and humor are balanced as in the best productions. Series juggles smoothly between seriousness and irony, allowing the viewer to laugh one moment, only to freeze with anxiety the next.

Artistic photos complement the atmosphere. Although the pace of the story is slower, it never becomes monotonous – every minute is perfectly spent. We want to know what happens next. This is a series that respects the viewer, serving him an intelligent script, where each thread has its place, and the ending is a real reward for those who are patient.

Alistair Petrie as Robert Chance it undoubtedly attracts the audience’s attention. Even though his hero is terrifying and certainly no one would like to meet him in real life, it is difficult to take your eyes off him. It has a magnetism that is hard to resist.

However, in the world of “History”, men are only a background – it is women who rule this series. Their complexity, strength and determination are the heart of the story. Rebekah Staton and Marianne Jean-Baptiste make an amazing duo, and every female character, regardless of screen time, is brilliantly developed. I haven’t seen such professional acting for a long time.

The series hits extremely topical topics – fraud, misogyny, gaslighting – in a way that forces reflection. The story of single women falling into the trap of an intelligent manipulator echoes in reality, where too often similar fraudsters go unpunished. The creators treat these serious issues with respect, while not forgetting about the entertainment aspect of the story.

This is the art of deception at its best, and creative storytelling, interviews with victims and bold breaking of the fourth wall make every minute filled with content. This is a production that not only delivers on its promises, but also it leaves the viewer with the feeling that they have watched something truly special. I think many people will like the series – it’s really worth reading.
