It was difficult to avoid changes, since one of his pillars left the band – playing keyboards and the guitar Rafał Wojczal. The gap after him could probably be filled (hardly anyone remembers it today, but at the very beginning Piotr Kaliński, or Hatti Vatti, played on the organ, but the corpse always gave the impression of a common design of colleagues, not a rock’n’roll machine, whose elements can be replaced if they loose too much.
So there was a trio, and consequently there was a kind of condensation, and not only because the first publishing house after personal changes is less than a quarter of an hour – but intense as many similar length of punk publishers – EP. On “Mourners” There are no unhurried, hypnotizing reminiscent moments “Lit” or “All and all” from the album “B flat a” from 2022, which even demanded to close their eyes and allow themselves a little sleep. The song formula is not deconstructed here to a less regular, psychedelic, though held by reinforcement with a constant rhythm of shape, as in “Sick“.
In a refreshed formula Corpse They have become more intense and more energetic, which is not complete new – who had the opportunity to participate in the band’s concert, will quickly realize that this time the recordings simply reflect live performances.
The producer had considerable merit in achieving such a sound Nickname Launaytoday most often mentioned as a collaborator Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Idles or Amyl and the Snifers, but it is worth remembering that this is one of the most important figures of post-punk from the 1980s. He recorded, among others, Killing Joke, Public Image Ltd and Virgin Prunes, and these early experiences fled perfectly with the direction of the Gdańsk team.
In the opening album, single “Sister Ray” scratching bass Wojtek Juchniewicz Although it does not seem a bubbot characteristic for post-punk, it takes a role that corresponds to the front. The most interesting effect, however, is caused by contrasts – the verses are rather gloomy and thick, the chorus of the dur and transparent, with the guitar party thinning the darkness of the bass. Juchniewicz and Grzegorz Kwiatkowski They sing (the first in the verses, the second in the chorus) at quite regular intervals in the scheme of versopza-pada-pauza, and Tomek Pawluczuk Playing a change of foot-werbel-ting volume or foot-toe-stopa-werbel foot. It is simple, certainly very catchy, but far from banal. It is no secret that it is often easier to grow into crazy experiments than to compose a hit melody.
Effectively overshadowed in “Sister Ray” gloom “Looking for”in which you can also easily catch interest in repetitions. The press note attached to the album found the sentence: “An important reference point and inspiration for the new material is Holger Czukay” and indeed emblematic repetition for the bassist born in the free city of Gdańsk, known primarily from one of the most important bands of Krautrock – CAN – was more emphasized here. Its scope remains diversified over the length of the entire EP, for example in “No more” It manifests itself mainly in verses, as eight equal strokes into one piano key and eight in another, but all attention is stealing the phenomenal bass party, which returns in mind long after the end of listening.
By “Backwards Water” The prefix “Post” can be properly abandoned and left the “punk” – a lively tempo and “sewing” on the guitar sometimes makes the trio more like Amebix from the period “Arise!” than to Gang of Four. At the concerts it must be a deadly piece, but the corpse would not be herself if it survived at one idea to the very end – at the very final there was some space for a drastic dynamic change. The band’s closest to the next publishing house is headed by the title of the title of the title, the most diverse and packed with extremes. On the one hand, Krzyki Juchniewicz, on the other, Kwiatkowski’s gentle voice. From one guitar, as if borrowed from Inxs, on the other, the drums fall into almost a centrifuge mode twice (from this best period – a breakthrough of centuries), and in addition, in the end, ghostly organs require a literal understanding of the title of “mourners”.
Plantiness in the texts of the corpses, however, is never really, which Kwiatkowski has repeatedly emphasized. The version of versions-pauza-pada with “Sister Ray” serves not only phrasing in harmony with the iterative foundation of the composition, but even more torn the text into shreds, which can be interpreted in various ways. Everything today is associated with a terrible situation in the world, radicalizing policy, climate change, a dangerous direction of technology development, deepening the abyss between rich and poor and reflecting all these anxieties can be found in the words with “Mourners”. To a lesser extent, however, this is a specific message or call to fight, in a greater fuel fuel for those who have been smoldering for a long time. However, whoever wants to pull only catchy chorus and dance rhythms from this EP will not be disappointed either.
The composition of the corpse decreased, but the music has grown, became more direct and falls quickly. Neither better nor worse, because the discography of this team does not have weak points, but it deserves recognition to take the risk of going beyond the proven aesthetic regions and try something different. The effect in the studio turned out to be thundering, at concerts it will probably increase the firepower.
