Sam Mendesknown among others from the films American Beauty, 1917 and Skyfall, does not hide his enthusiasm for his latest project:
“Maureen, Linda, Yoko and Pattie are four fascinating, unique women – and I am delighted that we have been able to enlist four of the most talented actresses in modern cinema for this extraordinary adventure,” the director said in a statement to Sony Pictures.
A revolutionary idea for a film about The Beatles
Each of the four films will be told from the perspective of a different band member, and their stories will intertwine, creating a full picture of The Beatles’ journey – from the beginnings in Liverpool, through the peak of fame, to the conflicts and final breakup of the group.
It is also the first time that Apple Corps Ltd. – a company founded by the band members – has granted permission to use both The Beatles’ music and biographical threads in feature film productions. This means that we will hear the quartet’s original recordings in the films, which also makes the project unique in musical terms.
As Sony Pictures announces, more names of actors who will play important characters from the band’s environment will soon be revealed – including: Cynthia Lennon, John’s first wife; Brian Epstein, the legendary manager of The Beatles; George Martin, the music producer responsible for the group’s sound, and Ravi Shankar, the sitar master who inspired Harrison to explore Eastern music.
Sam Mendes’ project is already being described by critics as a “generational cinematic event” that could redefine the way stories about musical icons are told.
