The script of the series “The Sympathizer” is based on the motifs of the novel “The Sympathizer” by Viet Thanh Nguyen. Its hero is a Viet Cong captain who, long after the fall of Saigon, reports to his superiors about every move of the commander of the South Vietnamese army and his compatriots he rescued, who start a new life in Los Angeles.
The main character was played by Hoa Xuande (“Cowboy Bepop”). The remaining roles are played by Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Ky Duyen, Sandra Oh and Robert Downey Jr. The latter played as many as four characters.
Showrunners and executive producers are Don McKellar and Park Chan-wook. The latter also directed the first three episodes
Park Chan-wook is not the only recognized creator who created the series “The Sympathizer”. One of the episodes was directed by Fernando Meirelles, author of the Oscar-winning “City of God”. The group of directors of the HBO Max series is complemented by Marc Munden (“Utopia”).
“Sympatyk” is a co-production of HBO, A24 and Rhombus Media, produced in cooperation with Moho Film and Cinetic Media.
