“The ship goes on.” A unique event of Roman Kostrzewski’s memory

Let us remind you that the group’s vocalist Kat & Roman Kostrzewski He died on February 10, 2022, five days before his 62nd birthday (the cause of death was cancer).

Roman Kostrzewski He was born in Piekary Śląskie, but he was strongly associated with Bytom. It is in this city at the festival Silesian Rock In 1981 he met the group’s musicians Cornerwho soon became a vocalist. He died in a hospice in Bytom and was buried here at the municipal cemetery.

In this city, on the first anniversary of his death, an information board was unveiled on the Square of Roman Kostrzewski next to OSiR (indoor urban swimming pool). The name of the singer was given in October 2022 by the decision of the City Council in Bytom. The initiative came from Social Committee of Remembrance of Roman Kostrzewskiwhich they supported, among others vocalist’s daughter – Natalia Kostrzewska and the President of Bytom Mariusz Wołosz.

Another expression of tribute to fans became a mural on the building at ul. Kołłątaja 1 in Bytom-Karbiu. One of the initiators of the action is Tomasz Grulawhich together with other people collected funds for this, including during the concert on the occasion of the second anniversary of Kostrzewski’s death. It was they who also chose the location of the mural – this wall is visible from the national road, which is passed by thousands of cars every day.

On the wall of the building, a photo was reproduced from the cover published in 2021 by a biography dedicated to Kostrzewski. The creator of the mural is known in Bytom Wojciech Walczykwho painted a portrait Grażyna Wołowiecknown as “Bytomska Smurfetka” According to the design Agnieszka Mϋller.

“I think that Roman Kostrzewski’s mural is one of my better work. Working on it, I had a great picture at my disposal that allowed me to spread my wings. Not always the material we have at our disposal is good, then you have to guess a lot. This photograph gave to interpret well ” – comments Wojciech Walczyk.

A quote also appeared on the mural “My ship goes on …” from ballad “Tear for past shadows” groups Corner.

At CK Wiatrak in Zabrze, the third edition of the musical homage for Kostrzewski will take place. The club gates will be opened at 17, and the concert will start at 18.

The event will close the special performance of the group Pop with the participation of musical friends. Under this banner they remained currently Jacek Hiro (guitar) i Jacek Nowak (drums) who performed in the last composition of the band Roman Kostrzewski & Kat.

Roman Kostrzewski – legend of Polish metal

Roman Kostrzewski is one of the most important representatives of Polish metal. The singer in the early 1980s headed the legendary group Cornerwhich next to the bands Turbo and Tsa It is mentioned as a “great Trinity of Polish Metal”. Together with the executioner he toured alongside Metallica and Iron Maiden.

The history of the KAT band, which he co -founded, dates back to 1981. Just 3 years later, in 1984 during Festival in Jarocinthe group received the highest distinction from the audience. Concert with Hanoi Rocks added popularity to Kat, and a year later their first album was released – “666”as well as the English version “Metal and Hell”.

Kostrzewski gained respect on the Polish stage and quickly became one of the most recognized vocalists of Polish metal. In their texts, the band raised a controversial subject – rebellion against God, magic and occultism. The vocalist’s voice was of course a characteristic element of their work.

In the spring of 1999 he left the team Piotr Luczekand shortly later the band suspended their activities. A conflict broke out in the band, which is why in 2005 the musicians established a group Kat & Roman Kostrzewski. Drummer Ireneusz Loth Together with Roman Kostrzewski joined forces with Piotr Radecki (guitar), Krzysztof “Pistlet” Pistelok (guitar) i Michał Laksa (bass). In the last composition alongside the singer they performed Jacek Hiro (guitar), Krzysztof Pistelok (guitar), Michał Laksa (bass) and Jacek Nowak (drums).

In March 2019, the band released the last studio album so far “Popiór”. The formation’s achievements also include albums “White and white” (2011), “Beech – acoustically” (2014) I “666” from 2015, i.e. the newly recorded second album of the Kat Kat, originally released in 1986.

For several years, the musician has been struggling with health problems and recently with cancer. In September 2021, his musical friends organized a charity concert in Wrocław “See you in hell”. On the stage appeared, among others: Tomasz “Titus” Pukacki (vocalist and bass player Acid Drinkers),, Adam “Nergal” Darski (vocalist and guitarist Behemoth),, Piotr “Peter” Wiwczarek (vocalist and guitarist Vader),, Maciej “Ślimak” staroste (drummer Acid Drinkers and Flapjack),, Adrian “Fred” Frelich (vocalist Dragoon),, Krzysztof “Fazi” OSET (bass Dragoonformer group musician Corner and Alkatrazproject of Roman Kostrzewski), Piotr “Mancover” Mańkowski (guitarist Wolf Spider),, Wacław “Vogg” Kiełtyka (guitarist Decapitated), Marek “Spider” Spider (guitarist Vader),, Jarek “Gronos” Gronowski (guitarist Dragon, ex-kat) and there were musicians Kat & Roman Kostrzewski: guitarists Paweł “Baitel” Pasek (ex-decapitated) and Piotr Radecki.
