After years of silence about the continuation of one of the funniest film series, “The Naked Gun” is preparing a triumphant return, and fans of absurd humor have something to look forward to. The classic, which triumphed in the 1980s and 1990s thanks to the unforgettable Leslie Nielsen as Lieutenant Frank Drebin, gained a new chance on the screen thanks to Seth MacFarlane, the creator of “Head of the House” and “Ted”. MacFarlane, known for his sharp, uncompromising humor, promises to update the series without losing its original spirit.
We will see an unexpected choice in the main role: Liam Neeson, known for his dramatic and thriller roles. This time, however, Neeson, who will play the son of the unforgettable Lieutenant Frank Drebin, will take on a more comedic face, spiced with a pinch of absurdity, for which the original was so loved. His partner will be Pamela Anderson as his lover, the equivalent of the character previously played by Priscilla Presley. The cast also includes Paula Walter Hauser, who will play Drebin’s partner, and Kevin Durand as a villain who will mess up the heroes’ lives.
Behind the camera will be Akiva Schaffer, associated with the comedy group “The Lonely Island”, and his collaboration with Dan Gregor and Doug Mande on the script ensures that the humor is not lost. MacFarlane, the creator of “Head of Family” and the “Ted” films, serves as a producer, so we can certainly expect bold and original solutions.
Although the reboot refers to a crazy police comedy that parodied the cinema of the 1970s and 1980s, the new version is to be adapted to contemporary realities, with a satire on the world of politics and media.
“The Naked Gun” is back in a big way! The premiere is scheduled for July 18, 2025.
The new installment of the cult series has already finished its first test screenings. “World of Reel” quoted one of the positive opinions that appeared after the screening.
“This ‘The Naked Gun’ perfectly matches the tone of the original. There are plenty of funny gags – some are really great, some are a little worse, but none of them feel off-putting. The plot is neatly built and the action is fast-paced, everything wraps up in 90 minutes. (…) the humor is a good combination of ‘Austin Powers’ and ‘Family Man’. Neeson is perfect, playing in a deadly serious tone, his character is so well-conceived, the actor fits the humor perfectly every time. Anderson was also very good . Some of the best jokes seem to come straight from the minds of ‘The Lonely Island’ (the comedian trio, including director Akiva Schaffer, Andy Samverg and Jorma Taccone – editor’s note) reminded some of the movie of ‘Pop Star’. and ‘Hot Rod,’ was just as fun,” a reviewer described from a test screening.
