“The Mummy”: the cult film will return to the screens! Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are back in the cast

“I don’t know how it would work out, but I would be open to it if someone came up with the right idea,” said Brendan Fraser in 2022 about the return to the cult “The Mummy” film series.

The actor starred in three installments of the blockbuster: “The Mummy” (1999), “The Mummy Returns” (2001) and “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” (2008). In all of them, he played his most recognizable character so far – treasure hunter Rick O’Connell. The plot of the first part began the crazy adventures of the hero who accidentally wakes up an Egyptian priest with supernatural powers. On screen, Brendan Fraser was accompanied by, among others, Rachel Weisz, John Hannan, Arnold Vosloo, Kevin J. O’Connor, Oded Fehr and Jonathan Hyde.

The script for the production was written by Stephen Sommers and John L. Balderston. The former was also behind the camera of the film, which was produced under the Universal banner. The production grossed a spectacular $416.4 million worldwide and gained cult status over the following years. Viewers appreciated the successful reboot of the old film, the action-packed plot and the humor that made the film, despite the “terrible title”, not at all.

Fantastic information has spread around the world. We know that the original main actors of the production – Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz – will return to their roles in the 4th installment of the cult series. This will be a great return for the actress who only appeared in the first two films in the series. The director is Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from Radio Silence, who created, among others, a new version of “The Scream” (2022) and “The Buried Game” (2019).

Universal has not yet commented on the matter. The studio previously tried to revive the series with a 2017 film starring Tom Cruise. The production turned out to be a total failure and plans to expand the universe were canceled.

“It’s hard to make a movie like this,” Fraser said about the film with Tom Cruise. “An ingredient we had in ours ‘Mummy’which I didn’t see in the new version, was funny. That’s what was missing in that version. It was too typical a horror movie. ‘Mummy’ “It should be suspenseful, but not scary or scary.”

After leaving Hollywood due to personal health problems and accusations against the former president of the HFPA, Fraser made a great career comeback in the 2022 film “The Whale”, for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Rick O’Connell remains his most iconic role to date. Does this mean that a new stage in his career is about to take place? We still have to wait for the answer.
