“The Love Algorithm”: Review. A huge dose of embarrassment and… entertainment!

  • A dozen or so participants take part in the program “The Love Algorithm”. The show was supposed to be shot in sunny Spain, but due to the scandal of the previous season and budget constraints, instead of foreign beaches, they will be filmed in a villa near Warsaw. Death, wedding, abstinence and increased activity, sudden plot twists – this and more in “The Algorithm of Love” – we read in the Canal+ description.
  • He acts as a host Michał Czernecki. Performers at his side include: Helena Englert, Wiktoria Gąsiewska, Jakub Sasak, Małgorzata Socha, Karol Dziuba, Mateusz Dymidziuk, Katarzyna Gałązka, Adam Zdrójkowski, Aleksander Kaleta, Waleria Gorobets, Pola Błasik, Kamil Piotrowski, Emilia Walus, Dorota Chotecka , Katarzyna Borkowska, Ewa Gawryluk and Filip Lipiecki.
  • “The Love Algorithm” was shot in style mockumentaries. The characters address the audience, commenting on the events presented on the screen.

Are you ready for a huge dose of embarrassment? The latest Canal+ series presents its proposal. It must be emphasized that the shivers of embarrassment are a desirable feeling in this case. After all, “The Love Algorithm” aims to use caricature and absurdity to mock popular dating programs. Does it carry out the task effectively? I'm in a hurry to answer!

“The Love Algorithm” was shot in a mockumentary style. The so-called “hundreds” are an integral part of reality shows. In addition, Łukasz Sychowicz, who is largely responsible for the success of the Polish “The Office”, famous for scenes in which the characters address the audience directly, worked on the script for all episodes.

In the case of “The Love Algorithm”, dating programs are ridiculed because they themselves can be embarrassing, uninteresting, and undemanding from the audience. During the first two episodes it is difficult to get into the specific atmosphere of parody. The cast of the Canal+ series delivers jokes that are “dry”, flat, one may wonder whether they are really a joke. Only after some time, when we get used to the format and become involved in the fate of the characters, do we start to really enjoy the scenes we watch on the screen.

As in the case of “The Office PL”, Polish stereotypes are ridiculed, Poles' approach to various social problems and, above all, the absurdity of modern dating programs is highlighted. The parody culminates in the finale, but I will refrain from spoilers here. I must admit – I did not expect what happens in the last episode. In my opinion, this is the perfect icing on the cake of “The Algorithm of Love”, which mocks not only the above-mentioned show, but also the pathology associated with… the Polish Internet (I am very careful not to tell you what is happening there, but it is definitely worth the wait).

I watched ten episodes at once, so I got very involved in this world. Perhaps for this reason, after some time I stopped believing that I was seeing actors on the screen, and more and more often I had the impression that I was watching another dating program. The cast is very convincing in their roles. It especially stands out Karol Dziuba, an actor who has recently appeared in completely different editions. He appeared, among others: in the new “Samy their own” or the TVP costume series production – “Dewajtis”. In “The Algorithm of Love” he plays the role of Albert “Dragon” – a real-life homie who cares about his loved ones and, although he seems thick-skinned, he cares about the emotions of others. He is as relaxed as possible. His “mordo” or “mordini” rings in my ears to this day. Either Dziuba showed off his versatile acting talent, or he found a friend “Dragon” deep inside himself who sounded great on screen.

The greatest advantage of “The Algorithm of Love” are the characters. Characters that are exaggerated and exaggerated to the extreme, and above all, irritating. On the other hand, they have a certain quality about them that makes the audience like them. Whether it's empathy, or a sense of humor, or just endearing… stupidity.

I had a great time watching “The Love Algorithm”. I received entertainment, perhaps not of the highest order, but definitely mind-boggling. Showing Poles in a distorting mirror, in a slightly different way than “The Office PL”, hit my sense of humor. I couldn't shake the impression that “The Algorithm of Love” is the Polish “The Curse” (with emphasis on “Polish”). Of course, its quality and atmosphere are not comparable to the A24 series, but in that case the absurdity of the TV program was also ridiculed. However, it must be emphasized that in “The Curse” it was one of many threads, and in “The Algorithm of Love” it is the essence of the entire series.

After watching “The Love Algorithm” I feel dissatisfied, but the finale allows me to hope that there will be a second season.

10 episodes of the series “The Algorithm of Love” available from May 22 on Canal+ Online.
