“The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power”: New Season Underperforms, Prime Video May Be in Trouble

About the series produced by Amazon Prime Video “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” It was a big deal from the moment it was ordered to be produced. The reason was its crazy budget, estimated at even a billion dollars (the first season alone cost 465 million, and it was clear from the beginning that this story would not end there.) This immediately made it the most expensive series in history.

Its premiere was watched by as many as 25 million viewers, and then the total viewership exceeded the limit 100 million viewers.

The series introduces viewers to the Second Age of Middle-earth. The action takes place thousands of years before the events described by JRR Tolkien in ““Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”takes viewers back to an era of great power. Viewers follow the heroes from the Misty Mountains, through the Elven forests of Lindon, to the realm of Númenor and other distant lands of Middle-earth.

The latest season shows “Middle-earth in the throes of discord, sown by Sauron, and the deception and manipulation that lead to the creation of the titular Rings of Power. Unexpected alliances are forged in the flames of fire, and true friendships are put to the test,” we read in the press release.

Within two years of its premiere the production has gathered many mixed reviews. Many criticized the way Middle-earth and its inhabitants were presented. Despite unfavorable reviews, the first season enjoyed huge popularity, probably due to the desire to get to know the new show from the universe. The second part of “The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power” unfortunately does not make as big results as its predecessor.

According to Samba TV, the premiere episode was watched by only 902 thousand viewers in the US within four days of its premiere, which means a result that was twice as weak as the first season. The weak viewership can also be confirmed by the fact that Prime Video has not published its statistics yet. Two years ago, when the results were satisfactory, the company quickly presented information that the first two episodes were watched by 25 million viewers worldwide, and that was only during the first 24 hours!

Official data is expected to appear at the end of September.
