The Hochbergs’ Path under the Książ Castle. A trail like from “The Lord of the Rings”

The Hochberg family was one of the richest in 19th-century Europe. Having a gigantic castle was apparently not enough for them, so they decided to “design” the surrounding nature as well.

It must be admitted that the aristocratic plan still works today. It is a well-thought-out, engineering structure that winds over the cliff, crosses the river and disappears into the darkness of rock tunnels. Walking along this trail is like visiting an old, romantic outdoor party.

100-meter precipices and an amazing atmosphere

What is most surprising about the Hochberg Trail is the topography itself. Its walls are steep, rocky and densely covered with lush vegetation. Due to the specific microclimate at the bottom of the valley, you can count on a pleasant coolness even on the hottest summer days.

The route is extremely dynamic and does not allow for boredom. Tourists sometimes wander just above the water, listening to the sound of the river, and a moment later they climb onto the rock shelves and admire the spectacular views. However, the most loved by photography enthusiasts are the hanging footbridges, metal bridges and tunnels carved directly into the raw rock.

The mystery of the ruins in the middle of the forest

Halfway there, the highlight awaits hikers – the ruins of Stary Książ Castle. There is an extraordinary historical curiosity behind them. Contrary to appearances, it is not an authentic medieval stronghold destroyed by time, but a deliberate hoax.

They wanted to create a dark, romantic place perfect for organizing knights’ tournaments and court banquets. Although the walls were artificially aged, today they look extremely authentic. What’s more, this is probably the most beautiful view of the “main” Książ castle, which stands proudly on the opposite hill.

Practical information. What’s worth knowing?

For people planning a trip, we have prepared the most important tips:

1. : the trail has the form of a comfortable loop, approximately 6-7 kilometers long. It is best to start the hike right under the Książ Castle and follow the signs of the nature trail (partly it is a green trail).

2. : just covering the distance takes about two hours. However, it is worth booking at least three – the accumulation of viewpoints makes stops for photos inevitable.

3. : the route is described as medium difficult. It does not require an athlete’s fitness, but walking in flip-flops or urban white sneakers is strictly discouraged. After rainfall, clay paths and stones can be very slippery. Solid, sports or trekking shoes are essential on this trail.
