“The Historyof Sound”. Paul Mescal promotes an affair in Cannes

“The History of Sound” Oliver Hermanus talks about two musicians (Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor) who, after the end of World War I, go on a journey to New England. The heroes begin to romance with each other.

Mascal is not a fan of comparing “The History of Sound” with “The secret of Brokeback Moutain”. “I don’t see any convergence at all, except that several scenes take place in the tent” – said the actor for “Variety”. “‘I think that such comparisons are lazy and frustrating. My attitude towards our film is mainly due to the celebration of the love of these men.”

He added that the image of a man in the cinema is changing before our eyes. “I think that we are rather leaving the cinema from traditional alpha males in the lead roles. I do not think that (our) film defines or try to redefine masculinity. In my opinion, it is very subjective towards Lionel and David’s relationship,” continued Mescal.

O’Connor, who could not appear in Cannes, could not admire, because he finished work on the set of Steven Spielberg’s new film. “Josh has a great gift. (…) We have known each other for five years and we were friends, so there was a foundation for a sense of security and a desire to play, but our relationship really deepened within three or four weeks when we were spinning,” he confessed.

“The History of Sound” was shown as part of the Main Competition of the 78th International Film Festival in Cannes. The film received six -minute ovations after the premiere. However, its assessments are rather average. In the ranking of the screen International magazine, he received an average 1.9 note on a four -stage scale.
