– I didn’t want to make such a classic, documentary film in which I talk about the most important moments of my career. I wanted to do it my way, to tell the whole story in a completely different way, he says Grzegorz Krychowiak in an interview with Rafał Pawłowski on the occasion of the premiere of Jan Dybus’s series.
A four-episode documentary series produced by Papaya Films for the SkyShowtime platform shows the Polish representative at the end of his football career and preparing for a new challenge – expeditions to Mount Everest. The camera accompanies him during his journey and conversations with his father and brothers, which bring back moments of triumph, but also moments of doubt and defeats on the field.
– How did they look at these more difficult and better moments? How did they deal with criticism? These are things we haven’t talked about often – says the football player.
The series does not shy away from humor and everyday life. Next to mountain photos and sports archives, there are scenes from private life, such as the one in which Krychowiak cooks dinner for his wife Celia on the occasion of their wedding anniversary. Culinary is another of the footballer’s passions. While playing in European and non-European clubs, he had the opportunity to try cuisine from various regions of the world. And on the screen, he enjoys discovering the specialties of Nepali cuisine.
Although “One Step from the Top” also tells about the end of a football career, Krychowiak does not try to pretend that he lives in the past.
The footballer emphasizes that he is now focusing on other challenges, and the expedition to Mount Everest is one of them. And he admits that although it looks like a pleasant walk on screen, it wasn’t always easy.
– On the last day I was glad it was over. I saw from some members of the team that this is the moment, that it’s good that there are not two or three days of extra days – he reveals.
“Krychowiak: a step from the top” it’s more than a sports documentary. This a story about how a man tries to redefine himself outside of the profession that has defined him for years. And about the fact that fulfillment and happiness do not always go hand in hand with subsequent contracts and statistics.
The hero of Jan Dybus’s film clearly emphasizes that the most important thing was one thing: to tell my story in an authentic way… So that at the end of the day it will be Grzegorz Krychowiak, whom we can understand and see in the best possible way.

The four-episode series “Krychowiak: a step from the top” can be watched from November 27 on the SkyShowtime platform.
