The production will be a biography of Martin, who became an icon of women's boxing in the 1990s. She was the first woman represented by Don King and the only boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. Thanks to her successes in the ring, as well as her charm and beauty, Martin quickly gained many fans. Unfortunately, in the shadow of her sporting triumphs, the dramas of her private life took place.
In an interview with Deadline Sweeney she admitted that she would like to start preparing for the role. “I practiced grappling and kickboxing from the age of 12 to 19. I can't wait to get back in the ring, train and see the changes in my body. Christa's story is easy, it's physically and emotionally demanding, it's a big burden. But I love challenges,” said the actress.
“Christy Martin not only promoted women's boxing, she also overcame gender stereotypes and fought against emotional, physical and financial abuse. I am fascinated by the world of fighting, and Christy's story represents an incredible success, while also showing her struggles outside the spotlight. I feel compelled to tell the story of a woman , who faced a lot of adversity and didn't let it get the better of her. It's powerful and emotional,” Sweeney continued.
Michôd wrote the screenplay with Mirrah Foulkes. “In the past, I made films about men with problems and I wanted to make another one about a woman with wild energy. When I came across Christa Martin's story two years ago, I knew I had found my heroine,” said the director. “Animal Kingdom”.
The film doesn't have a title yet. The creators will be looking for financing and distributors during trade fairs during the Cannes festival, which will begin with the event next week.
