Directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series tells the story of Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), who is faced with overwhelming problems. Falling into increasing debt and blackmailed by loan sharks, the man is unable to take care of his sick mother or support his daughter, who after the divorce moved in with his ex-wife. He happily accepts the offer to join the competition, in which the stakes are billions of yen. However, he does not know that he agrees to competition, which, under the guise of childish games, turns into an uncompromising fight for survival.
The series attracted as many as 142 million viewers in the first 28 days of release. This means that “Squid Game” has become the most watched Netflix original production ever. Meanwhile, director and creative mind Hwang Dong-hyuk became the first Asian to win the Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series category at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards.
Three years after winning the Squid Game, player 456, who had given up on going to the States, returns with a new resolution. Gi-hun decides to dive back into the deceptively candy world, starting another game of life and death. The hero wants to take revenge on the Leader at all costs. The prize of 45.6 billion won is no longer the highest stake in this game for him.
