Shailene Woodley (“The Fault in Our Stars,” “The Descendants”) will star in a biographical film about Janis Joplin. The project will receive $2.5 million in funding from the California Film Commission. The chosen portrayer of the legendary singer is currently 32, making her five years older than Joplin at the time of her death.
There have been numerous attempts over the years to portray the life of a rock star, but none have come to fruition. Previous candidates for the role included Melissa Etheridge, Pink, Brittany Murphy, Renée Zellweger, Zooey Deschanel, and Amy Adams. The film currently has no director.
Janis Joplin was one of the most iconic and successful artists of her era. She was most often associated with the hippie movement and psychedelic rock. Her unique voice and electrifying stage presence mesmerized listeners every time. In her short career, she recorded four studio albums. Two of them were created in collaboration with the group Big Brother and the Holding Company (“Big Brother & the Holding Company” and “Cheap Thrills”), and two were recorded solo. The last one, entitled “Pearl”, was released after her death. The artist was often included in rankings created by, among others, Rolling Stone magazine as one of the most important and talented vocalists of all time.
Joplin passed away on October 4, 1970, at the age of just 27. Her great hits, such as “Cry Baby”, “Piece of My Heart” and “Me and My Bobby McGee” are appreciated to this day.
