Winona Ryder spoke in an interview about her close relationship with Keanu Reeves. The actress always calls him her husband in text messages, while he calls her his wife. It turns out that the genesis of this story dates back to 1992, when they met while working on Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula.” On the set of the film, the actors made a marital vow and have stuck to it to this day.
While they’re both reluctant to use technology, when they do message, they’re always affectionate. Ryder spoke on the Happy Sad Confused podcast about wishing each other happy birthday.
“I always write: happy birthday, my husband!” – she admitted in the conversation. Reeves’ messages are also full of warmth and emotion.
“Answers: ‘Hey, wife! I love you! KR, 57’. (…) On every birthday he replies ‘KR, 57’, or however old he is, and he’s always done that. He’s the best.”
Although the actors were never a couple, Ryder revealed in another interview with Entertainment Weekly that she and Reeves were technically married because they were on the set of the adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel. they were married by a real priest from Romania.
“We actually got married while we were filming ‘Dracula.’ I swear to God, I think we’re married in real life. Francis (Ford Coppola) hired a real Romanian priest for that scene. (…) So I think we were married,” she said during a 2018 interview.
When Reeves later asked her if they had actually said “I do” at the ceremony, the actress replied, “You don’t remember that? It was on Valentine’s Day.” Reeves responded to the memory by saying, “Oh my God, we’re married.”
The actors later met to work on two other productions: “A Mirror Darkly” (2006) and “Wedding Fate” (2018).
