Ian McKellen – a titan of acting who can do anything – returns to the role of Hamlet after many years. Ghosts, including the ghost of Hamlet’s father, appear in the Royal Theatre in Windsor, which has been deserted for the duration of the pandemic, to remind the world in chaos and his son of the indestructible power of revenge and theatre.
The downright crazy idea of casting an 85-year-old actor in the role of the young Danish prince allows us to look at Shakespeare’s most famous play from a completely different perspective, and the decision of the producers of the latest “Hamlet” (directed by Sean Mathias) to make various spaces of the Theatre Royal Windsor Elsinore – the stage, backstage, dressing rooms, auditorium, theatre corridors – shows respect for the conviction of the greatest playwright of all time that the world is just a theatre.
This is “Hamlet” as never before: gripping, unusual, original, but also faithful to Shakespeare and his views on theatre and the human condition in the face of personal tragedy.
Ian Mckellen is a theatre magician and Shakespeare specialist. In addition to Hamlet, he has played Romeo, Macbeth, Coriolanus and King Lear. He is known to the world audience for his great film productions (Gandalf in “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” or Magneto in the “X-Men” series). For his achievements, not only as an actor, he has won the audience’s adoration and the most important awards (Tony, Golden Globe, Laurence Olivier Award six times).
