“Poor Creatures” is the amazing story of the evolution of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman who is brought back to life by the brilliant and unconventional scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under his care, Bella is eager to learn everything again, but she also wants to experience life to the fullest.
In search of new experiences, he sets off on a turbulent and adventurous journey across continents in the company of a clever lawyer, Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo). Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella is determined to pursue her goal of fighting for equality and independence.
The script for the film “Poor Creatures” was based on the book of the same title by Alasdair Gray. “The novel is a postmodern revision of Frankenstein, in which the classic monster was replaced by Bella Baxter – a beautiful young erotomaniac brought back to life with the brain of an infant. Parodying the classic Victorian novel, Gray created a witty political allegory in which the theme of the duel between men's desires and women's independence plays an important role, “still extremely current” – we read in the description of the book on the website of the Poradnia K publishing house.
The film impressed at festivals, but also aroused controversy due to its bold scenes. “When it seemed that everything in the cinema had already happened and it was difficult to surprise with anything, he enters, all in white. Yorgos Lanthimos. The Greek director, who, regardless of whether he shot films in his homeland or abroad for an American studio, made originality and extremely unconventional thinking his hallmark. The latest proof of this is “Poor Creatures”. The film captivated the Venetian audience, who gave it a standing ovation for over ten minutes, loudly chanting the director's name,” he wrote in his reviews for Interia Kuba Armata.
Critics especially note the main role. Emma Stone definitely gave the performance of her life in Lanthimos' film. This is the second meeting of the actress with the Greek creator. She previously worked with him in the film “The Favourite” – for which she was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting role. In turn, for her role in “Poor Creatures” she was awarded an Oscar in the category of best leading actress.
“Poor Creatures” will be available on the Polish Disney+ offer from March 27.
