Church in Sękowa: the pearl of the Low Beskids
Its characteristic features are a square tower topped with a domed cupola and wide narthexes (low arcades supported on pillars, covered with a mono-pitch roof, surrounding wooden churches or orthodox churches), which were built later, in the 18th century.
Logs, i.e. long wooden beams, were hand-hewn. The building is almost entirely covered with shingles.
The picturesque church has long aroused the interest of artists. The building was immortalized in their works by, among others: Stanisław Wyspiański, Józef Mehoffer and Włodzimierz Tetmajer.
Soldiers used wooden material from the roof, tower and walls to build trenches during the Battle of Gorlice. The interior of the church was also damaged.
Reconstruction started in 1918, but conservation work continued – with breaks – until the end of the 20th century.
Nowadays, the interior of the church is quite simple, and there is a painting depicting saints: Nicholas, Benedict and Anthony, as well as a sculpture of the Savior of the World.
In addition, the church has folk-baroque paintings of the Stations of the Cross from the 17th century and two feretrons from the 18th century.
It also attracts attention
The church in Sękowa is under special protection. However, many years earlier, the temple attracted the attention of the Europa Nostra organization, which promotes and protects cultural and natural heritage on our continent.
The works included not only the exterior of the building, but also the equipment and surroundings. The work carried out was one of the reasons why it was included on the UNESCO list.
