What was life like for Niall Horan during One Direction?
Niall Horan appeared as a guest on the podcast “The Good, The Bad and The Football”, where he talked about how great recognition made it difficult for him to function. The young star was unable to appear in public places.
“I tried my best to keep my privacy outside of work, because my life has always been very private. There were periods when I literally didn’t leave the hotel. I don’t think I left the hotel once in five years,” he explained.
However, he emphasized that his upbringing in the Irish town of Mullingar allowed him to remain modest and humble: “We had really good managers and a great team. I always felt that this Irish approach was important in the way I was raised. I never had any intention of thinking of myself as better. Although I probably did to some extent anyway.”
Being part of such a big boy band, the musicians did not fully realize the seriousness of the situation. Horan admitted that although they sometimes argued, they had a true friendship: “Yes, we argued sometimes. Neither of us were crazy, we really supported each other. We had a good team around us and we felt like we were in a bubble. It was only after the band disbanded that we realized how huge it all was. Even standing on stage, looking at the crowds, we were not fully aware of the scale of it.”
While on tour in South America, One Direction experienced something amazing: “We played a show in Uruguay, and after the show we flew to Lima, Peru. We drove past a huge shopping mall and said, ‘We’ll go there tomorrow.’ But the police did a crowd count – 10,000 people were waiting on the street in front of our hotel.”
The musician admitted that although he feels good about his solo career, he sometimes misses the other musicians: “I miss my bandmates in the studio and on stage. Now all the pressure rests on one person.”
Niall Horan is currently working on his fourth solo album and appears as a coach in the American version of the popular talent show “The Voice”.
