New discovery at Wawel. This is what the discovered “valuable, luxury item” looks like

So many people visited one of the most famous places in Krakow. Visitors can visit not only the State Rooms, the Crown Treasury, the Armoury or permanent exhibitions (currently, the museum offers, among others, an exhibition “Emotions. Lviv Rococo Sculpture”), which is located next to the royal palace and the Senator’s Tower.

Wawel is not only “tourist hit”. It is also a place where archaeological work and research is in full swing. That is why from time to time we can read about new interesting discoveries.

– – archaeologists from the Wawel Royal Castle wrote in one of their latest posts on social media.

In February, they revealed that during archaeological research they had found a ring from the early Middle Ages. It most likely belonged to representatives of the state elite. More on this in the article

They came across them during renovation work on the old fortress road. The original surface of the ramp was exposed under the ground in the form of a stone pavement with a gutter, which dates back to the mid-19th century. The pavement adjoins a brick tick wall, which was built by the Austrians in the years 1850-1853, which surrounds Wawel Hill to this day.

They reported that they found them during last year’s excavations in the basements of a former military hospital that operated here during the Austrian partition.

– The vessel has an intense blue colour. It is decorated on both sides with a painted ornament in white and gold. The decoration on the outside consists of spiral motifs, circles and lines in a striped arrangement. On the inside, we are also dealing with a striped arrangement, but the set of motifs is richer here. It is joined by triangles and other geometric patterns. The composition is more clearly divided here thanks to the use of horizontal, parallel lines – Jerzy Trzebiński from the Archaeology Department said in a press release.

The vessel is certainly not a local product, but came here from distant lands. It was most likely made in an Arab or Byzantine workshop. Further research is expected to confirm its origin.

– Finds of this type are very rare. The vessel found at Wawel has no analogy in Poland. There is no doubt that it was an exceptionally valuable, luxurious item. It certainly belonged to someone from the ruler’s close circle or to the monarch himself – emphasizes Trzebiński.

The fragments discovered by archaeologists are only a small part of the entire vessel.
