Her professional biography begins over 10 years ago, although her popularity and permanent place on the list of the most famous Polish singers ensured that Maria Żak adopted the pseudonym Mary Spolsky. She could be heard in the interpretation of texts by Agnieszka Osiecka and Marek Grechuta, but later her own compositions began to be characterized by sharpness of expression and directness of the topics addressed. She moved from a single-person kayak to a Kayax yacht, thanks to which she conquered the market.
As she says, there are no taboo subjects for her, especially in the sphere that unites everyone, i.e. sex and relationships. “Our whole image has changed, I moved away from the girl with the acoustic guitar and entered more into rave, techno and madness,” she says. Her compositions and performances perfectly complement the image, which does not lack claws.
Although many who are unfamiliar with Mera’s previous work may be a bit shocked after listening to the songs from “Erotik Era” for the first time, the songs released on this album tell the story of the struggle for acceptance, tolerance and satisfaction. They were very well received, among others, by the LGBTQ community, which resulted in the singer’s involvement in the program “Czas na Show. Drag Me Out”, in which actors, singers and public figures dressed up in drag queen costumes.
Mery Spolsky uses words and sounds to fight for body positivity and abandoning shame. When asked if it works these days or if it’s just a coaching cliché, she replies that she’s always liked to experiment with fashion and go on stage in very different styles, and her body has been different. “I’ve never been a model. I’ve often encountered comments that I’m too fat for this outfit or too vulgar for this body type. What does that mean? It pissed me off so much that I started writing songs about it,” she replies. As she adds, that’s how she started to confront these opinions.
For those who have complexes about their figure, Mery advises to simply… undress. “I started on the beach, until I took this idea to the stage and the more I undress on stage, the more freedom, self-confidence, madness I feel. I recommend it to everyone,” the artist sums up. She also wrote about accepting her body in her book.
The artist admits that people come to her after the concert and say that thanks to her they changed something in their lives. “That’s the coolest thing. I didn’t expect to be an inspiration for such things, and yet these are simple, everyday life things,” she confesses.
When asked about the boundaries of artistic expression that she will not cross, Mery Spolsky says that she has listened to other authors’ lyrics and said: “Okay, this is a bit out of my style. But I don’t judge it, because I know that sometimes my songs can sound like that to other people.” The singer admits, however, that sometimes she has to be brave to say something bluntly.
Mery Spolsky can definitely be said to be a distinctive artist. The place for distinctive artists is Eurovision. Will we see Mary on the European stage in front of millions of viewers around the world? “I would be a great fit, because I have a nickname that would make it unnecessary to say where I’m from,” she jokes. However, she adds that the political “vibe” and the atmosphere that divides people don’t suit her in this competition. “It’s slowly changing. I’m observing. I’m looking…” – she answers mysteriously. However, she admits that participating in this show was never her dream. And she talks about these openly. – Woodstock, Męskie Granie and… a duet with Charli XCX. “The ‘Brat’ project resonates with me a lot. It’s also about liberation,” reveals Mery.
