In an interview with Deadline, Watts recalls that Apple representatives were satisfied with “Lone Wolves” and asked the creator to write a second part of the heroes’ adventures. However, what surprised the director and influenced his trust in Apple was the last-minute change in the distribution of the film – instead of to international cinemas, as originally planned, “Lone Wolves was released on streaming.
Watts revealed in an interview with Deadline that after this information he asked Apple not to include information about the sequel in the press release. However, his request was not granted.
“I quietly paid them back for writing the second part (…) It wasn’t Apple that canceled the ‘Lone Wolves’ sequel. I did it (…).”
As the director admits, he did not trust Apple as an artistic collaborator.
At the beginning of October, we reported that “Lonesome Wolves” debuted at the Venice festival, then was to be released in cinemas, and finally on Apple TV+. Unfortunately, the cinema halls were empty, so the new production by Jon Watts was quickly withdrawn from distribution and appeared on streaming on September 27.
The film debuted at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. On September 20, it was shown in cinemas and after just a week it was published on the Apple TV+ platform. The prospect of seeing “Lone Wolves” in the comfort of one’s home just a week after its cinema premiere did not necessarily encourage viewers to buy tickets. The predictions of failure in cinema halls were confirmed, which is why Watts’ production made a short tour of America and bypassed international cinemas to be immediately included in the Apple TV+ offer. It turned out to be a spectacular success.
Apple did not provide official viewing statistics, but Deadline obtained data showing that no film in the history of the streaming platform has scored so high. The film was most frequently watched in the USA and Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Italy, Germany, Mexico and Brazil.
IN “Lone Wolves” George Clooney he plays a specialist hired to cover up a crime. But when another “expert” appears (Brad Pitt), two lone wolves are forced to work side by side. But everything spirals out of control in a way neither of them expected.
