Kora was buried at Stare Powązki in Warsaw. A bench with the inscription “KoraKamil” was installed next to her final resting place – a combination of the singer’s nickname and the name of her second husband, Kamil Sipowicz, who accompanied her until the last moments of her life. On the eve of All Saints’ Day, he appeared at the grave to take care of Kora’s grave together with his friends.
Three months after Kora’s death, her relatives installed a plaque with the singer’s photo at her grave. An inscription appeared on the back of the board “Love is eternal longing” – a quote from the song “Angel” Maanam group. Two years after his death, a monument of a female figure designed by Monika Osiecka. The grave also bears Kora’s year of birth along with the infinity sign.
“Why do people cover her grave with hideous lights?” – she was nervous at the beginning of October prof. Magdalena ŚrodaKora’s friend who visited the cemetery at that time. After her visit, the grave was cleaned up – the candles can still be seen in front of the grave.
Kora – a legend of Polish rock
Olga Aleksandra Ostrowska was born on June 8, 1951 in Kraków. She was the fifth and youngest child Marcin Ostrowski – a Krakow official and his second wife – Emilia.
In her youth, she became involved in the Krakow hippie movement, which for Kora was an expression of rebellion and an escape from the unified world, the poverty of her family home and the ordinariness of everyday life. Her artistic nickname – Kora – comes from the hippie period. Later, already in the 1970s, she was also friends with the early Krakow bohemian circles, including: With Piotr Skrzynecki, Jan Bereś, Wiesław Dymny.
In the early 1970s, she started dating Marek Jackowskiblues musician, collaborator Piwnicy pod Baranami. In 1976 he founded, together with Milo Kurtis team Maanam. In the same year, Kora made her debut on the stage of the “Aspirynka” club in Poznań, together with Maanam. Initially, the band played alternative music inspired by the culture of the Middle East, but in the late 1970s, with an expanded lineup, it became a rock band.
In early 1980 they released the single – “Divine Buenos/Lust for Money”. From that moment on, Maanam became one of the most important and best-known rock formations in Poland. The musicians’ performance at the festival in Opole in 1980 was a success, thanks to which Maanam became the biggest star of independent music. In the summer of the same year, the musicians released their first self-titled studio album “Maanam”.
The band achieved success primarily thanks to the singer, whose characteristic voice and artistry were heralds of a new rock aesthetics in Polish music of those years. In total, Maanam released 11 studio albums and after 32 years of activity, it was disbanded in December 2008.
In the following years, Olga Jackowska performed with former musicians of the band in a formation called Kora. In 2011, their first album appeared on the market – “Ping Pong”. In the same year, Kora sat on the jury of a music show on Polsat television – “Must Be the Music”.
In 2016, the artist became the heroine of a film directed by Bartosz Konopka “The Road to Mastery”in which, alongside representatives of the art world – Tomasz Stańko, Janusz Gajos, Agnieszka Holland and Rafał Olbiński – talks about his path to success.
On April 20, 2016, the Phonographic Academy honored Kora with the Golden Fryderyk for lifetime achievement.
