Oliwia Kopcik, Interia music: 30 years have passed since the release of the first author’s album, how do you recall that time? Did you think that he would be an icon of Polish music?
Kayah: – I planned so (laughs). Youth has something insolent in it that it does not assume failure, and even if it happens, such youth can turn it into his truth about this failure, i.e. he absolutely does not accept it and believes that it happened because others do not know each other. And such youth does not give up. So that Kasia from that time is very jealous of this determination and strength, because today I do not have one. Did I know ..? I didn’t know, I was experimenting all the time on a living body. This is a miracle. It is said that the artists have their five minutes, I feel great gratitude, because it lasts fifteen.
And are you able to choose one favorite song from the whole repertoire?
– It is like mothers to ask which child loves the most. I am terribly proud of “Jakayakayah”, which was a groundbreaking album, one that allowed me to face the new reality. It was the first album after great success with Goran, where I went to electronics and so on. But … there are so many wise songs I wrote. For example, the one I wrote after my divorce – “I divide in half” – which still breaks me in half. “On the balcony in Verona”, which tells about the endless loneliness of man among other people, among people, creating a beautiful world that can be admired only with one pair of eyes, so as if this world was half. “To hell with proverbs”, where I care about this reality in a very wise way. “Under the eyelid” is a very important song that I wrote for Natalia Kukulska, my beloved friend. I also think that “on the fingers”, which I wrote on the posthumous album of Zbigniew Wodecki.
I don’t know because of it, but all these songs talk about some process of leaving, leaving this world, leaving us helpless. Perhaps at such a moment of life I am now and such an important song has recently been very deep in the message “Apart from you nothing”. It is also important “please dance”, I am totally grateful to Dawid Kwiatkowski that he decided to invite me to this project, he opened to my suggestions when it comes to text and interpretation … This is a wonderful man. Really, so much luck meets me that it completely balances all the misfortunes.
And the other way – you have such a song that you think: “God, why was it published”?
– Not for such reasons you think … You say “lady” to me, I will also say “lady”. Not for such reasons as you think. Rather, such that these are vocal mare. Kobyła is a slogan among artists. This is a song that makes your throat blood fly, because you composed the song so much that there are intervals, you have to sing strength and you just know that if you sing it, you have to reckon with the fact that you will not speak tomorrow. Such songs are “Supermenka”, unfortunately, “like a rock”.
And when I write a question about my favorite song, I wondered what mine would be and it was “Supermenka”.
– Well, because you are a supermen, look at yourself how you look beautiful!
Thank you and to you too! I can talk to “you” if I can talk to “you”.
– I have already forgotten that we were on you.
So … there were also a lot of duets.
– I’ll tell you why. After my fake and after the album, which I will not even say that I did, because I sang her in a replacement of a very talented girl who withdrew at the last moment … It was the album that was created in cooperation with the wonderful man and the music of John Porter and his English colleague Neil Black, but I was not mature at all, I was not ready for this album, I just went and sang for someone. It was a total false start. So after this album I took care of the choirs. Someone even said that I had a monopoly on choirs in Poland. This monopoly brought me a total result, because over 40 records with my participation were created. It was also a creative work, because nobody imposed anything to me, I could realize myself. It was a great adventure and I still miss it. I love to co -create with other energies, that’s why I love duets. I really don’t care whether I stand on the front line or at the very end of the choir, because that’s not the point. The point is that a large, valuable whole arises, thanks to our common energy. I don’t have to get over the first row. Therefore, dear artists, if you feel like it, please invite me to the table (laughs).
We used to talk about a duet with Michał Bajor and it was he who told me that duets are difficult because you have to compromise.
– Yes, but it’s not difficult for me. Because I always have such an attitude towards my stage partner that I give him forums. I have no problem with withdrawal. What’s more, performing with such a stage partner is much more demanding for me, because to screw my own performance, well, at most I will cry in the pillow, but if I do it to someone, I will not survive it. And Michał Bajor is a special man, a huge class, culture, language culture, treating the audience and worrying like a small child in his debut. For me it is amazing to watch how he behaves before each concert, although he ate his teeth on the stage. But this means that he has great respect for the audience.
It’s so at the end – what to wish you for the next years?
– For us! Life in a nice country, respecting all citizens, safe, thinking about seniors and students, about their development, so that they have the motivation to educate. I wish us all health and good healthcare. And love to everyone, because it seems to me that if each of us carried her element in and could give it to others, this world would look completely different.
