Joachim Trier impresses Cannes. “Sentimental Value” with a 19-minute ovation

Joachim Trier, director known among others From the “worst man in the world” nominated to the Oscar, he again won the hearts of the audience at the Cannes Film Festival. His latest film Sentimental Value had its world premiere on Wednesday evening at the famous Grand Théâtre Lumière, where after the screening viewers rewarded him with a ovation lasting 19 minutes. This is one of the longest applauded films of this year’s main competition.

A whole team of creators appeared on the red carpet: Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning, who, together with the trier, presented the world to the world this intimate story about complicated family relationships. A moved audience expressed her appreciation after lighting the lights – the ovation did not quietly.

The main heroine of Sentimental Value is Nora (played by Reinsve), an actress who unexpectedly renews contact with her father Gustav (Skarsgård) – a once valued director. The man offers his daughter a role in his new film, which is to be a return to film salons for him. When Nora rejects the offer, Gustav engages a young Hollywood star (fanning), which leads to a series of confrontations and tensions between her father, daughter and her sister Agnes (Lilleaas).

Trier once again proves that he can talk about human relationships with extraordinary precision and empathy. His film raises the topics of transience, regret, unfulfilled ambitions and difficult art of forgiveness – all this set in the world of art and film, which in itself becomes a metaphor for a complex family life.

Although the Cannes festival does not conduct an official ranking of ovation length, 19 minutes is considered an almost record result. For comparison, the legendary “Fauna maze” Guillermo del Toro in 2006 had a 22-minute ovation. “Sentimental Value” certainly joined the group of the strongest titles of this year’s festival and serious candidates for the Golden Palm.

Neon – a label, which has already successfully promoted the previous works of Trier, is responsible for distributing the film in North America. The rights to distribute in other countries were purchased by the MUBI platform, which announces the wide presence of a film in artistic cinemas and at film festivals around the world. If the reactions from Cannes are an announcement of further reception, Sentimental Value may prove to be one of the most important European films of the year.
