Jack Lowden was born on June 2, 1990 into a Scottish family. As a child, he attended dance classes at the Manor School of Ballet, but he was much more interested in acting and football. When he was 10, his parents enrolled him in the Scottish Youth Theater. Two years later he played John in the pantomime Peter Pan at the King’s Theater in Edinburgh.
In 2013, he began playing significant roles in British television series and feature films. He gained recognition thanks to titles such as “The Passing Bells” (2014) or “War and Peace” (2016). 2017 was a breakthrough moment for him. Viewers watched him as Morrissey in the biographical film “England Is Mine” and the three-Oscar-winning “Dunkirk” by Christopher Nolan.
From 2022, we can admire him in one of the main roles in the Apple TV+ series “Lame Horses”. His performance was appreciated with an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination. He also recently starred in the film “Ella McCay” alongside Emma Mackey and Jamie Lee Curtis.
In 2018, he appeared in the historical drama “Mary, Queen of Scots”. Although the production itself received mixed reviews, it turned out to be a breakthrough in the life of Lowden and the four-time Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan (“Little Women”, “Ladybird”), who played the title role. It was the first time the actors had the opportunity to work together and they hit it off almost immediately. In Josie Rourke’s work, they appeared as a married couple, which, as it turned out years later, also translated into reality.
The first rumors about their relationship appeared immediately after the premiere, but the actors did not want to comment on the matter. However, everyone noticed that they got along great and spent more and more time together. When media representatives asked for any confirmation, they both agreed that this was not a topic for the press. At the end of 2023, a large diamond ring was noticed on Ronan’s finger. A few months later, the couple got married. The lovers got married in Edinburgh, and invited only their family and closest friends to the event.
“I always thought I would never have friends, let alone a partner. I was kind of a recluse, I had my own world,” said the actress in an interview with USA Today.
Ronan and Lowden have also welcomed their first child into the world, but they still avoid talking about it at all costs. They both value peace and privacy.
A few months ago, Netflix representatives announced a real treat for fans of romance and costume series – a new adaptation of Jane Austin’s cult book “Pride and Prejudice”. Dolly Alderton (“Everything I Know About Love”) is to be responsible for the production script. The role of the subdued and slightly gloomy Fitzwilliam Darcy was entrusted to Lowden, and Elizabeth Bennet will be played by Emma Corrin.
So far, the role of Mr. Darcy has been associated primarily with the performance of Colin Firth (BBC series from 1995) and Matthew MacFadyen (2005 film). For both actors, the role of the secretive aristocrat turned out to be a unique opportunity to develop and gain a group of fans around the world. Will a similar fate await Lowden? We will find out soon.
